On the eve of the Stanley Cup Finals, the NHL announced they will be airing a one-hour Award show on June 12, ahead of Game 4 of the Finals.
The show will highlight the players for their efforts during the regular season. The NHL are doing something different this year, as they are giving some players special announcements leading up to the show day. On Monday, Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov received both the King Clancy Memorial Trophy and Frank J. Selke Trophy in a special video where he was surprised by some kids from the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital:
Vancouver Canucks forward Pius Suter earned one fifth-place vote for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, which recognizes the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game. PWHA members vote on this award.
Each NHL team elects one player for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy. The NHL Commissioner, Gary Bettman, and former award winners choose the recipient who best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community. The Canucks nominated Quinn Hughes for the award.
While these results are already in, there are seven more awards that Canucks skaters can earn votes for. Here are the players who could potentially earn votes for the Canucks:
Hart Trophy
Description: The Hart is awarded to the player judged to be the most valuable player to his team.
Quinn Hughes is the Canuck skater that could pick up votes for the Hart Trophy.
Throughout the season, Hughes single-handedly carried this team offensively. The Canucks captain led the team in points with 76 in only 68 games. In games without Hughes this season, the Canucks had a 6-6-2 record and were outscored 28-35 without him in the lineup.
To put it into perspective, the Canucks averaged 3.06 goals for with Hughes in the lineup. With Hughes out of the lineup, the Canucks offence plumetted, averaging just 2.0 goals for per game.
Other top contributors, Brock Boeser and Elias Pettersson, struggled, with neither player eclipsing 50 points during the season. As a defenceman, Hughes was one of two to lead his team in points (Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets). With 26 more points than the next-highest teammate, Hughes had the fourth biggest point differential in the league (David Pastrnak 49 more points, Nikita Kucherov 31 more points and Jack Eichel 27 more points).
To have the fourth-largest point differential and one of two defencemen to lead his team in points should earn Hughes a handful of Hart Trophy votes.
Lady Byng Memorial Trophy
Description: The Lady Byng is awarded to the player who exhibits the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability.
We likely won’t see any Canuck skater receive votes for this award.
But if we were to see a Canuck receive a vote for this award, Brock Boeser and Elias Pettersson might have the best odds of earning a fifth-place vote.
Boeser tied Conor Garland for the lead in points (50) by a Canuck forward, while registering a low penalty minute totals (16). Pettersson had fewer points (45) and penalty minutes (14) than Boeser, but has been recognized for this award before.
In 2023-2024, Pettersson finished second in voting after scoring 89 points with only 12 penalty minutes. So, he probably has the best chance of earning a vote. However, with just 45 points, he likely won’t receive the same recognition this year. Brayden Point, Jack Eichel and Anze Kopitar are the three nominees for the award.
Vezina Trophy
Description: The Vezina is awarded to the goalkeeper who is considered the best at his position.
Kevin Lankinen has the best chance to earn a vote for the Vezina trophy.
It was his first season earning starter reps, and he came through with the best numbers of his career. Lankinen finished with a 25-15-10 record with a 2.62 goals against average and a .902 save percentage, with four shutouts.
Now, these aren’t numbers that would earn him a ton of votes. But with him proving that he could be a starter in this league and the fact he was the sole reason the Canucks stayed in a few games, should catch the eye of some GMs around the league. Connor Hellebuyck is the runaway favourite for this award, with Andrei Vasilevskiy and Darcy Kuemper also being nominated.
Calder Memorial Trophy
Description: The Calder is awarded to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year in the NHL.
Like the Lady Byng, the Canucks aren’t expected to have a skater receive a vote for this award.
The Canucks have Aatu Räty, Max Sasson, Victor Mancini and Elias Pettersson who hit the 25-game mark to qualify for the Calder trophy. If we had to pick one player who might receive a vote, we would look at Pettersson.
Earning a call-up after strong AHL play, Pettersson fit in seamlessly and gave the Canucks coaching staff no choice but to keep him in the lineup. He finished the season with one goal and three points with a minus-4 rating through 28 games.
Pettersson brought a physical and reliable defensive game that could have impressed some of the voters for a fifth-place vote. However, it was a strong rookie class, highlighted by Macklin Celebrini, Lane Hutson, Dustin Wolf and Matvei Michkov. So don’t hold your breath on him not receiving a vote.
James Norris Memorial Trophy
Description: The Norris is awarded to the defenceman who demonstrates the greatest all-round ability in the position throughout the season.
Well, this one is easy because Hughes is one of the three finalists for the Norris trophy. He, Cale Makar and Zach Werenski are nominated for the award, as they were the top three point-getters by blueliners. Makar led the way with 30 goals and 92 points, Werenski finished with 23 goals and 82 points, and Hughes finished with 16 goals and 76 points.
However, Hughes may draw second place consideration as he finished with a higher points-per-game (1.12) than Werenski (1.01), and finished marginally behind Makar (1.15).
Unfortunately, Hughes will likely fall short of the back-to-back Norris trophies, but his earning enough votes to be a top-three nominee after the season Vancouver had is a positive.
Bill Masterton
Description: The Bill Masterton is awarded to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
Dakota Joshua was not one of the three nominees. However, he should certainly garner some votes for the Bill Masterton trophy after his cancer diagnosis.
Joshua was diagnosed with testicular cancer in the summer, resulting in him missing the first month of the season. He was able to on November 14, but his season overall was a disappointment with just seven goals and 14 assists through 57 games.
The other three nominees, Marc-Andre Fleury, Gabriel Landeskog and Sean Monahan, are all deserving of their nominations for their seasons, but after what Joshua went through, will likely receive votes as well.
Ted Lindsay
Description: The Ted Lindsay Award is awarded to the most valuable player in the NHL, as voted on by the players.
If he receives votes for the Hart Trophy, Hughes’ peers should also notice his efforts this season to earn some votes. Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar and Nikita Kucherov were the top three vote-getters.
