There are few things better in life than having the support of your sibling cheering you on. Canucks captain Quinn Hughes knows that feeling well because his younger brother, Jack, was able to attend a playoff game this past spring.
The journey to get to that stage is as hilarious as it is heartwarming. Jack Hughes had quite the experience trying to get over to Vancouver to watch Quinn play in the postseason, and he reflected on the endeavour during a recent appearance on 32 Thoughts Podcast.
While at home recovering from shoulder surgery that prematurely ended his season, Jack was at home binge-watching the Stanley Cup playoffs where he admitted he was watching more Vancouver games to catch his brother in action. Apart from using it as motivation to fuel his hunger to get himself and the Devils back next year, he was impressed by Quinn and the Canucks’ ‘lock-it-down playoff hockey’ that helped them edge past the Predators in the first round.
Instead of just staying at home watching Canucks playoff games on his television, Jack wanted to make his way out West to be at Rogers Arena to catch the action in person. It was his way of returning the favour that Quinn did the year prior when he made his way over to New York to watch the Devils face the Rangers during the playoffs.
There was only one small problem: Jack could not find his passport. While disappointed that his younger brother wasn’t able to make it in time for one of the earlier games in the series, Quinn held no barring since he knew Jack was rehabbing at their family home in Michigan.
What helped was that Ellen Weinberg-Hughes, the mother of the two NHL stars, was already in Vancouver to cheer on Quinn. It was also her that helped make this story have a happy ending for the brothers.
Quinn got a request from his mom on the morning of Game 7 between the Canucks and Oilers to bring home some extra pasta for lunch, which he found strange as it was never asked before during the five years he has been in Vancouver. When he got back home, his mom said she had to head downstairs to make some coffee and then came back up with Jack, who’d had his passport shipped in time for him to fly out to Vancouver for Game 7.
Even though Quinn had to take his game-day nap, seeing his brother make his way over to Vancouver despite losing his passport had him buzzing.
“I was shocked. I couldn’t believe it,” Quinn recalled in an interview with Sportsnet. “Obviously, the pasta was for him. I didn’t want to go for my nap. I just wanted to stay up and shoot it.”
Despite his team falling short in Game 7, he was grateful to have Jack with him postgame.
