Welcome back to Instant Reaction, the series here at CanucksArmy where we give you our instant reaction to tonight’s Vancouver Canucks game and ask our readers to do the same in the comments section below!
Tyler Myers opened this game by taking a penalty for delay of game.
The Canucks’ penalty kill, which has been red-hot lately, managed to kill the full two minutes off without giving up a shot. As the penalty expired and Myers exited the box, the big man took a pass from Drew O’Connor and moved in on a breakaway, where he made no mistake.
1-0 Canucks.
Arturs Silovs was feeling it early, as he made a couple of nice glove saves early on.
Silovs made an even nicer save off of Leo Carlsson immediately after, and as John Shorthouse said on the broadcast, the first 10 minutes of this game already had more action than all of last night against the Kings.
On Silovs, I really liked the calmness of his game. He’s always had the raw tools and the athleticism, but that can only get you so far. Tracking the puck is much easier when your body is less busy, and that’s what Silovs managed to do early on.
Another guy who was feeling it in this one was Tyler Myers, who wheeled and dealed to put the Canucks up by two heading into the second period.
2-0 Canucks.
15 goals for Pius Suter. Will he set a career-high and hit 16 this season?
The Ducks came out flying in the second. First it was Frank Vatrano, who made it 2-1.
Shortly after, Cutter Gauthier tied things up when he moved in off the rush and sniped one far side on Arturs Silovs.
2-2.
Before the end of the second, the Canucks got a power play chance, but spent most of the next two minutes chasing down the puck as the Ducks played keepaway.
After the penalty expired, the Ducks scored their third unanswered goal as Derek Forbort got a bit too close to Tyler Myers while defending the rush.
3-2 Ducks heading into the third.
The Canucks’ power play got a chance to bring the team back in this game. Nothing could have been worse than their last power play chance.
Pius Suter made a great pass to Jake DeBrusk at the net-front, but Lukas Dostal made one of his best saves of the night in tight on Vancouver’s number 74.
But the Canucks didn’t score.
Quinn Hughes tried his best to drag the Canucks back into this one.
Unfortunately, it was another rush goal against Arturs Silovs that served as the dagger.
4-2 Ducks.
The Canucks pulled their goaltender with over three minutes remaining, and the Ducks added an empty netter.
5-2 final.
Some more takeaways from tonight:
-Overall, not a great start for Silovs, who looked good in his last start.
-I get it’s mainly to keep Hughes fresh, but I’ve seen enough of the 11 forwards 7 defencemen formation. Get Forbort a night off.
-Mark my words, Dakota Joshua is going to come alive soon.
-Lukas Dostal is a solid goaltender.
-Not the most inspiring Canucks performance.
-Nights like tonight, where Anaheim’s top six outplayed the Canucks’ top six and looked more dynamic, are nights it would be great if the Canucks had a true star in their forward group.
-Zero shots for Elias Pettersson tonight. A minus two.
-Wyatt says it best:
Make sure you read The Stanchies later.
