When the puck drops on Monday night in Vegas, Vancouver Canucks winger Evander Kane will become the 420th player in National Hockey League history to participate in 1,000 regular season games. In his first 999 contests, the 34-year-old has registered 338 goals, 309 assists, 647 points and 1276 penalty minutes.
Drafted fourth overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in 2009, Kane has suited up for 69 games this season for the Canucks, scoring 12 goals and recording 30 points. It’s been a difficult season for both Kane and the Canucks. Like just about everyone else in the lineup of a last place team, Kane hasn’t been terribly productive and he also hasn’t been the physical force the team had hoped for when he was acquired last June. Still, he’s sixth on this team in scoring this season, just four points out of fourth. He’s second only to Jake DeBrusk in shots on goal with 165.
A consistent goal scorer throughout his career, Kane twice finished with 30 goals – first in 2011-12 with the Winnipeg Jets and again in 2018-19 as a member of the San Jose Sharks. His most productive season was that 2011-12 campaign with the Jets when he finished with 57 points. Not known for his power play prowess, Kane had an outlier season in 2019-20 when he struck 14 times with the man-advantage in just 64 games with the Sharks. Only three players in the league were more productive power play goal scorers than Kane that season.
Over the course of his 16-year NHL career, Kane has played for Atlanta, Winnipeg, Buffalo, San Jose, Edmonton and Vancouver. As individual stops go, Kane holds career highs in games played (361), goals (109), assists (113), points (222) and penalty minutes (385) as a member of the Jets. From his time spent in the Eastern Conference early in his career, Kane has played more games, scored more goals and recorded more points against the Washington Capitals than any other NHL opponent.
While he won’t add to his totals this season, Kane has also appeared in 97 Stanley Cup Playoff games over six separate appearances – twice with the Sharks and each of the past four seasons with the Oilers. In 2021-22, Kane shared the playoff lead in goals with Nathan MacKinnon, both players scoring 13 goals.
Through the years, Kane has recorded 10 hat tricks and has had eight penalty shot attempts. Interestingly, he scored on his first as an 18-year-old rookie, but has not converted in the seven opportunities since.
When Kane reaches the 1,000-game marker, he will become the ninth player to do so in a Vancouver Canucks uniform, joining Daniel and Henrik Sedin, Trevor Linden, Markus Naslund, Tyler Myers, Dave Babych, Ryan Walter and Pit Martin.
With the achievement coming on the road, it’s expected that Kane will receive his customary silver stick from the team and the league during a pre-game ceremony at the Canucks next home game on Saturday, April 4th, against the Utah Mammoth.
Who knows what the future holds for Evander Kane and how many more NHL games he’ll play. But on Monday night, he will become a member of an exclusive club and should be saluted for an accomplishment that reflects a career of solid, consistent production that has allowed him to reach one of the sport’s greatest milestones.
