GIF: Brock Boeser had quite the weekend for North Dakota

Mar 7, 2016, 17:00 ESTUpdated:
Vancouver Canucks prospect Brock Boeser had himself a weekend, tallying three goals and assists playing for the University of North Dakota against Western Michigan University. Boeser’s scoring helped lift North Dakota to the Penrose Cup on Friday with an 8-1 victory over WMU – the award given to the first place team in the NCHC. They topped that off on Saturday with a 5-4 victory.
The second-ranked Fighting Hawks face Colorado College next weekend in the NCHC quarterfinals. They’re 3-0-1 on the season against Colorado this season. Let’s take a moment to soak in this one before making that jump, though.
Boeser put up two goals and two assists in the 8-1 romp of WMU on Friday night, and both of his goals were great displays of skill. Even garnering the attention of TSN’s Craig Button on twitter.
On a soft pass from Troy Stecher, Boeser is able to put it top corner against the grain. What’s impressive is that he is ready to take the shot before the puck is on his stick. Unfortunately, that gif does not include the play before where Boeser enters the zone with speed and circles the net. He has the poise and patience to allow his teammates to get set-up. The Western Michigan players look kinda helpless and it eventually leads to the former first round picks goal.
Boeser’s second goal from Friday night:
Dances around the WMU goalie and tucks it in. Chicago first round pick Nick Schmaltz had a similar play earlier in the game. Boeser had an assist on that goal.
In large part due to the WMU players giving too much space, Boeser gains the zone dishes to Caggiula. He passes across the zone to Schmaltz, and he takes it from there. Boeser assisted on a power play goal by Paul Ladue late in the second period.
Boeser’s goal on Saturday was also a treat:
Even though the WMU defenders give him so much space, he is still attacking the middle of the ice, like it’s no big deal.
Now at 25 goals for the season, Boeser is the first University of North Dakota freshman to score that many since Zach Parise scored 26 in 2002-03. Boeser concludes the regular season first in the NCHC in goals, and also points within in conference games. The Minnesota native has points in 20 of his last 23 games, and has 34 points (20-14-34) during that time.
From here on out, it’s playoff games and given that anything can happen, there is no way to predict how many games UND will have left but given how well Boeser has been playing, he should pass Parise’s total in no time.
Jim Benning has mentioned that he expects and hopes Boeser will return to North Dakota next year, but hopefully Boeser is having weekends’ like this at Rogers Arena sooner than later.
