The Vancouver Canucks announced two hires to their Hockey Operations department late Monday afternoon.

Ryan Stewart has been hired as the team’s Director of Hockey Strategy and Player Evaluation, while Adam Sergerie has been hired as a Pro Scout.

“Ryan brings a championship pedigree and a wealth of hockey knowledge to this brand new position,” Canucks GM Ryan Johnson said via a team press release. “He is someone we will lean on internally to help provide insight and information for our front office. With all his varied experience, wearing a number of different hats, Ryan is a big asset for our group moving forward. By bringing in Ryan and with the addition of Adam to our pro scouting ranks, our organization continues to invest in the areas needed to help our team grow and develop during this stage of our rebuild.”

Stewart, 52, began his management and coaching career in the ECHL with the Greenville Grrrowl (no, that’s not a typo), serving as an Assistant General Manager and Assistant Coach during the 2004-05 season before being promoted to General Manager for the 2005-06 season.

Following his time in Greenville, Stewart spent 16 consecutive seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks. He initially joined Chicago as a Video Coach for the 2006-07 season and even served as an Assistant Coach in 2007-08. He then transitioned into scouting and player personnel roles, spending two seasons as an Amateur Scout (2008-10) and two seasons as a Pro Scout (2010-12). His tenure with Chicago culminated in senior leadership positions, including seven seasons as Director of Professional Scouting (2012-19), one season as Director of Player Development (2019-20), and two seasons as Assistant General Manager (2020-22), a post he held until being relieved of his duties on March 4, 2022. Stewart won two Stanley Cups with the Blackhawks, one in 2013, the other in 2015.

Beginning in the 2022-23 season, Stewart joined the San Jose Sharks as a Senior Advisor with a focus on Pro Personnel. Prior to all of that, Stewart spent parts of seven seasons playing professionally, primarily in the ECHL. He appeared in 325 career games, split between Greenville and the Florida Everblades, registering 69 goals (nice), 88 assists, and 506 penalty minutes (also not a typo).

As for Sergerie, he’s a name that might ring a bell for BC-based hockey fans. Sergerie spent the 2025-26 season as the Director of Scouting for the WHL’s Penticton Vees. Sergerie got his start in junior hockey in 2021, when he joined the Sherwood Park Crusaders. He served as Assistant Coach and General Manager during the 2021-22 season before expanding his responsibilities to President of Hockey Operations. He remained in dual executive leadership as General Manager and President of Hockey Operations through the 2024-25 season, guiding the club through its transition from the AJHL to the BCHL. Prior to that, he spent multiple years in Alberta, holding various head coaching, assistant coaching, and video coaching roles with the KC Centennials, KC Pats, KC Squires, Team Northwest, Team Edmonton Blue, and Team Alberta. During the 2020-21 season, he served as the Director of Player Development and Coaching Development for both the KC Squires U15 AAA and KC Centennials U16 AAA programs.

A native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, the 40-year-old Sergerie played two seasons of pro hockey in the third-tier German league after playing four years of college hockey at Lakehead University. According to his Elite Prospects page, Sergerie put up 49 goals and 32 assists — good for 81 points — through 28 regular season games for the Erfurt Black Dragons before adding 14 goals and 7 assists through 10 playoff games. He spent one more season playing in Germany before heading back to North America and beginning his journey in hockey operations.
