Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid left after just 37 seconds of tonight’s game in Columbus. Blue Jackets defenceman Zach Werenski got his stick into McDavid’s skates on a zone entry, and McDavid went down hard before sliding along the boards with his skates in the air. Here’s a video of the injury:

The replay appears to show McDavid’s left skate jamming into the boards. There was no penalty on the play. McDavid went down the Oilers’ tunnel and did not return, with the team announcing shortly after that he would not be back for the remainder of the contest.
The Blue Jackets went on to take a 3-0 lead by the end of the first period, a harrowing glimpse for Oilers fans into what can happen when McDavid isn’t in the lineup.
The Oilers have gotten off to another rocky start this season, dropping games to the Chicago Blackhawks and Calgary Flames early on. They currently sit at 4-4-1, and at the time of this writing, they’re down 4-0 to Columbus. An injury of any length to McDavid would certainly put the Oilers behind the 8-ball as they hunt for their first Division win since 1987. As one of the game’s brightest stars, hockey fans everywhere are hoping McDavid can make a speedy recovery.
McDavid has rarely missed games in his career. A collarbone injury cut his rookie season short, and a knee injury ended McDavid’s 18-19 season in game 82. Other than that, though, McDavid has been relatively injury-free.
The Oilers’ captain had appeared in nine games prior to Monday’s, tallying three goals and 10 points, including a two-assist night Sunday during a 3-2 Oilers overtime victory over the Detroit Red Wings.
