The Vancouver Canucks have held plenty of candidates to fill their new General Manager role after letting go of Patrik Allvin. But a new name has surfaced in the Canucks’ search.
According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, former Ottawa Senators general manager Pierre Dorion was in Vancouver last week to interview for the Canucks general manager job.
Dorion started his career as an NHL executive in 1994 as an amateur scout for the Montreal Canadiens. He spent the following 11 years with the Canadiens organization before joining the New York Rangers as a scout of amateur teams. Shortly after that, Dorion was hired by the Senators as a chief amateur scout. And by 2009, Dorion was promoted to director of player personnel.
He served in that role for the next five years before being named assistant general manager of the Senators in 2014. At the conclusion of the 2015-16 season, long-time Senators general manager Bryan Murray stepped down, leaving Dorion to succeed him. After a season and a half in charge, Dorion was handed a three-year extension. And once that contract was done, the Senators gave him another three-year deal in 2021.
However, Dorion would not see the end of that contract, as he was fired on November 1, 2023, after a mistake he made in 2021. Dorion traded forward Evgeni Dadonov to the Vegas Golden Knights, but did not provide Vegas with Dadonov’s 10-team no-trade list. Then, when the Golden Knights traded Dadonov to the Anaheim Ducks at the next trade deadline, the league rejected the deal because the Ducks were on Dadonov’s no-trade list.
As a punishment, the Senators were forced to forfeit a first-round pick in one of the 2024, 2025, or 2026 NHL Draft. Dorion was fired once the punishment came down. The Senators elected to use their draft picks in 2024 and 2025, meaning that they would forfeit their 2026 pick. However, the league modified this punishment in mid-March.
The Senators will now keep their pick, but instead of picking in their regular spot, they will select 32nd overall and are not allowed to trade the selection. They were also forced to pay a $1 million fine.
During Dorion’s tenure in Ottawa, he made some impactful trades. To list a few, he traded Mika Zibanejad and a 2018 second-round pick to the New York Rangers for Derrick Brassard and a 2018 seventh-round pick. Acquired Matt Duchene in a three-team trade with the Colorado Avalanche and Nashville Predators. And traded Erik Karlsson to the San Jose Sharks for a draft pick that became Tim Stutzle.
After it was reported that Patrick Burke, Ray Whitney, and Ryan Martin were told they were out of the running for Canucks GM, there are still a handful of names involved. The reported remaining candidates are: Shane Doan, Jeff Tambellini, Brad Pascal, Ryan Johnson, Evan Gold, Brett Peterson, Jamie Langenbrunner, and now, Pierre Dorion.
