Derek Dorsett to Undergo Neck Surgery; Out Indefinitely

By Vanessa Jang
Dec 5, 2016, 16:51 ESTUpdated:
The Canucks’ long-term injury list just expanded, as the team announced Derek Dorsett will undergo surgery to repair a disc degeneration in his neck. Given the seriousness of this case, as well as the lack of precedent in the NHL, there is no timeline on Dorsett’s return.
Dorsett’s last game was on November 17 vs. Arizona. In Willie Desjardins’ post-game availability on Saturday, a question was asked whether Dorsett was the player closest to returning. Desjardins said, “No. Dorsett – I don’t know, what’s been said – he’s going to be out for a while, though.”
According to TSN 1040 AM, Dorsett will go under the knife tomorrow. These circumstances, unique as they are, will lead Dorsett to Marina Del Rey, California and be under the care of Dr. Robert Watkins at Watkins Spine Center.

This is not an injury that happened at an exact moment, rather one that’s been building over time. Dorsett might just now be at a stage where he can’t manage the pain.
The injury goes as far back as 2011 with the Columbus Blue Jackets, so you have to commend him for playing through it for this long.
It looks like Dorsett will be out for the remainder of the season. Given the severity of this situation, that news isn’t surprising. Any surgery in the neck or head region is bound to have an extended amount of rehabilitation. This is not a typical upper or lower-body injury, so patience, safety, and long-term health will be preached with regards to Dorsett’s return.
Dorsett’s absence opens up another roster spot for the taking. Dorsett has 4 points (1 goal, 3 assists) in 14 games this season, but it’s his physical presence that is coveted by the team. As of right now, Erik Gudbranson is the only full-time player who plays a physical game, though we’ve not seen it on a consistent basis.
Joe LaBate and his big 6’5, 205-pound frame will likely get the opportunity to fill in for Dorsett’s void. In his three games with the Canucks, Labate has one fight with Cody McLeod on November 26th. He’s not played since that game, but he is with the team and will likely slot in at some time during this road trip. He was an extra forward at practice today, so his status for Tuesday’s game is unknown.
LaBate made a name for himself with his impressive pre-season, therefore it seems only fitting that Dorsett’s spot calling his name. He also had this fight with Samuel Morin last year that only reinforces the tough guy he is:
Jake Virtanen may also be in the discussion too. Yes, there is a chance that Virtanen will be up in Vancouver sooner than expected. Through 10 games, he has 3 points (1 goal, 2 assists) and 10 PIM with Utica. The spot is sitting right in front of him, he just needs to play well enough for the Canucks to want to recall him.
We all wish Derek Dorsett a safe procedure and speedy recovery!
