The Utica Comets have added another defenseman on a PTO. The team announced today that they have signed Mathieu Brodeur to a pro tryout deal.
Brodeur is a 6’5″, 215lbs, left shooting defenseman. He was a third-round draft pick of the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2008 draft. The 27-year-old has played in seven games with the Springfield Thunderbirds and another four with the Syracuse Crunch in the AHL this season, to go along with 35 games in the ECHL with the Adirondack Thunder. He has put up one assist in his 11 AHL games while putting up three goals and 19 helpers with the Thunder.
Comets’ head coach Trent Cull will be familiar with Brodeur as he played in 56 games last season with Syracuse while Cull was there.
The move to add another defenseman is curious to me as the Comets currently have Patrick Wiercioch, Ashton Sautner and Adam Comrie on the left side, to go along with Guillaume Brisebois, Dylan Blujus, and Frankie Simonelli on the right side. Jaime Sifers is banged up, as is Jalen Chatfield, but it sounds like Chatfield isn’t far off.
It is possible that this move is for insurance should the Canucks make a move or two up top as the trade deadline looms, or in case the Comets lose another player to injury this week with four games on the schedule.
The Comets are back in action tomorrow for a noontime Pacific game vs the Belleville Senators. CanucksArmy will have your post-game report following the game.
