When Colorado and Minnesota combined for 15 goals in the opener of their second round Stanley Cup Playoffs match-up on Sunday night, many in the hockey world were scrambling for record books wondering about the highest scoring post-season games in National Hockey League history.
As The Athletic’s James Mirtle discovered, the Avalanche-Wild game was wild indeed, as one of only six instances where both teams involved scored at least six goals.
This got us here at CanucksArmy thinking about the highest scoring playoff games for the Vancouver Canucks. What we discovered was that the Canucks have never scored nine goals in a post-season contest and have never been involved in a playoff game with anything close to 15 goals scored.
The franchise record for Canucks goals scored in a single playoff game is eight and remarkably it happened on consecutive games against the Winnipeg Jets in Games 5 and 6 of the 1992 Division semi-final. The Canucks defeated the Jets 8-2 on April 26, 1992 and followed that up with an 8-3 victory two nights later. Otherwise, the Canucks tallied seven goals on four occasions including a 7-0 romp over the Calgary Flames in 1984. Defenceman Doug Halward scored a hattrick to lead the Canucks scoring charge that night. The most recent seven-goal outburst in a playoff game came in Game 2 versus San Jose in the 2011 Western Conference Final at Rogers Arena. Daniel Sedin scored twice while Chris Higgins notched a goal and added two helpers. Henrik Sedin and Dan Hamhuis each set up a trio of goals.
As for the most goals the Canucks have surrendered in a single playoff game. Well, Boston hung eight on the Canucks in Game 3 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Final. St. Louis also scored eight in an 8-2 win in a 1995 Conference Quarter Final game. And on 10 separate occasions opponents have registered seven goals against the Canucks in the post-season.
When it comes to the highest scoring playoff games involving the Canucks, two games share the record of 12 goals combined between the teams. The first was Game 2 of the opening round against Calgary in 1994 in which the Flames outlasted the Canucks 7-5. The other was a Chicago 7-5 Game 6 victory that eliminated the Canucks in the second round of the 2009 playoffs. The Hawks scored three times over the final seven minutes to erase a 5-4 deficit and Patrick Kane capped his hattrick with two of those three markers.
There have been three instances where the Canucks were involved in playoff games with 11 combined goals. The New York Islanders beat the Canucks 6-5 in overtime in the 1982 Stanley Cup Final. The Canucks defeated Los Angeles 6-5 in the 1991 playoffs and the Canucks beat St. Louis 6-5 in overtime in 1995.
