The future in net is here!
Well, kinda and may only be for a couple of days.
Earlier this afternoon, it was announced that the Canucks have recalled Thatcher Demko from the Utica Comets under emergency conditions.
It was reported by TSN’s Farhan Lalji that Anders Nilsson is ill and thus the recall for Demko was done as the Canucks have an early afternoon game against the Columbus Blue Jackets tomorrow.
The Canucks used Article 13.10m to recall Demko under emergency conditions as they do not have two healthy goaltenders on the roster. The Article is below:
As we can see, it’s clearly stated that a player who is unable to play due to injury, illness or suspension and a team has less than two goalies, can then use this clause to recall a player. It was done this way to protect the final regular recall that the Canucks have from the trading deadline to the end of the year. As per the CBA, every team is allowed four regular recalls in that timeframe and the Canucks have already used three with Nikolay Goldobin and Tyler Motte being sent down and called back up (to allow them to be eligible for the Comets) and the recall of Reid Boucher on March 6th.
It’s worth adding that Ashton Sautner is also currently on the Canucks roster due to emergency conditions.
The only downside to this method is that once the team has enough healthy bodies at that position, the player on recall has to be sent back from whence they came. The Canucks could then opt to burn that final recall to summon either one back.
There is some speculation that Demko might start tomorrow, but at this time, it’s unclear. Furthermore, there was a passing mention on the AHL Live feed of the Comets game that Demko is up with the Canucks for the remainder of the regular season. But like the possible start, there are no concrete reports on that.
With that being said, Canucks fans are hoping that Demko does get a start while he is up this time. He had been recalled a couple of times this season already but hadn’t suited up. Fair to assume we will have a better idea of what’s happening with Demko early tomorrow as the puck drops at Rogers Arena at 1 PM tomorrow.
