Canucks Player Power Rankings – Nov. 9th, 2015

Nov 9, 2015, 14:00 ESTUpdated:

It was a weekend of gloom for Vancouver sports fans as the Canucks dropped back-to-back road games, the Lions did not even manage a touchdown, and the Whitecaps season came to a disappointing end. But finding positives is possible if you try really hard and break the rules a little bit!
1. Jake Virtanen:
Another first career goal means another kid atop the power rankings. Jake “Big Country” Virtanen was the star of Rogers Arena’s Grizzlies night, scoring a pretty one against the Philadelphia Flyers. Jake also took part in his first NHL fight this week. Scoring and fighting? Talk about the Best of Both Worlds! (This is a good reference because Virtanen loved Hannah Montana)
2. Thatcher Demko:
What? He’s not even on the team! But on Sunday, prospect Thatcher Demko of the Boston College Eagles recorded his third straight shutout and his sixth shutout in seven games. It’s so impressive that it negates the silliness of ranking him above the Canucks that are actually in the NHL.
3. Henrik Sedin:
Including playoff points, Henrik Sedin scored his 1000th career point on Monday against the Flyers. Regardless of the playoffs asterisk, this is a very cool achievement.
4. Daniel Sedin:
Daniel Sedin is the lesser Sedin this week after giving away the puck that led to Buffalo’s game-winning goal on Saturday. He owned it and even gave us this wonderful .gif, so how can we stay mad at him?
5. Ben Hutton:
He can be a bit chaotic, but Ben Hutton is such fun to watch. He picked up his 7th assist in New Jersey, ahead of ever Mr. Assist himself, Henrik Sedin.
6. Jared McCann:
Aside from being the target of a bad Adam Larsson hit, McCann had another very nice week. He played on the powerplay and was even the subject of a Crosby comparison!

7. Chris Higgins:
Finally, a new Chris is atop the Chris Power Rankings! Chris Higgins returned from injury this week. After an uninspired performance against Pittsburgh, Higgins scored in each of the Canucks’ weekend outings.
8. Chris Tanev:
The Canucks become a lot worse when Chris Tanev isn’t playing. Hopefully he returns quickly from his finger injury, as he and Alex Edler are starting to have Sedinery-like passing chemistry. It doesn’t quite have the same ring to it, though:
9. Jannik Hansen:
Jannik Hansen may be the most fun player to watch in the offensive zone while shorthanded.
10. Sven Baertschi:
Sven Baertschi scores his first goal of the season and picked up two assists along the way this week. Gettin’ it done!
11. Bo Horvat:
Jake Virtanen was the only player who outshone Bo Horvat against the Flyers, leading to the headline we’ve all been waiting for:
12. Ryan Miller:
Ryan Miller’s return to Buffalo did not go the want he hoped it would but this save was still very very cool.
13. Alex Edler:
Tanev’s injury had barely even been announced when Alex Edler fell apart completely in his pre-game comments, stating that “it’s a good thing when you lose”. Edler managed to score a goal against New Jersey despite the lack of Tanev and the backwards understanding of sports.

14. Alex Burrows:
Burrows played his 700th career game this week and claimed that it meant that he was old. He backed this statement up with his terrible attempt to use a hashtag.
15. Jacob Markstrom:
Jacob Markstrom stopped 20/21 shots in the last game of his Comets conditioning stint and will likely be ready to rejoin the Canucks later this week. Hooray!
16. Radim Vrbata:
Keith Kinkaid is out here turning Radim Vrbata into Radim Vr-sad-a.
17. Yannick Weber:
I honestly do not remember Yannick Weber doing anything this week.
18. Brandon Sutter:
Brandon Sutter came face-to-face with not only his former team but the man who has twice dealt him:
19. Dan Hamhuis:
Dan Ham continues to lead the league in looking sad.
20. Alex Biega:
Alex Biega played in the NHL and did fine. Good for him!
21. Matt Bartkowski:
Bartkowski is about as chaotic as Ben Hutton, but the upside is considerably less.
22. Brandon Prust:
Stars! They’re just like us! Unable to join the team on the road, Brandon Prust is only able to fight battles through his keyboard. Sticking up for teammates has never been so 21st century.
23. Derek Dorsett:
The highlight of Derek Dorsett’s week was when he took the Canucks off the powerplay against the Penguins but got the chance to call Phil Kessel names from the penalty box. Atta boy!
24. Luca Sbisa:
After a banner week to finish October, Luca was placed on the IR and will miss significant time. He will be deeply missed by some, probably.
