The Vancouver Canucks’ uphill battle to record their first win of the season just got even steeper. Or harder, whatever word you want works.
The point is, things may have just gone from bad to worse for the Canucks, who are winless through their first six games of the season.
After today’s morning skate ahead of the team’s home tilt with the Carolina Hurricanes, head coach Bruce Boudreau delivered some tough news when he spoke with reporters.
Both Quinn Hughes and Travis Dermott are out week-to-week — Hughes with a lower-body injury and Dermott with an upper-body injury — and Riley Stillman and Brock Boeser are considered day-to-day.
The Canucks relied on Hughes for heavy minutes right from the get go to begin the new season, and are going to be relying on Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Jack Rathbone to play some big minutes for them until Hughes returns. With Riley Stillman also out with injury — and Tucker Poolman heading to injured reserve earlier today — Guillaume Brisebois was recalled from the Abbotsford Canucks and will likely get into the lineup tonight.
As mentioned, Boeser, who missed Sunday’s practice with a “maintenance day” is now considered day-to-day. Boeser had hand surgery in the preseason and returned earlier than expected, but like many on the Canucks, hasn’t found his normal form just yet.
The Canucks remain the only winless team in the National Hockey League and currently sit dead last in the league standings.
