a week ago in Banff #Canucks Demko claimed to have never seen a horse. Now, with Markstrom away, they need the young netminder to be one. Gonna ride him 🐴

THE INTRO
The Canucks welcome the visiting Detroit Red Wings this evening to Rogers Arena. Vancouver will look to bag their third win in a row (a win streak some have called it). Former Canuck Alex Biega will make his Red Wings debut against the team that started it all for him. Detroit’s Anthony Mantha has been busy lately with six goals in six games. He scored four in one game, but still.
It’s been a long time since a Canucks/Red Wings game had feeling but it’s possible we see some fireworks tonight.

Jacob Markstrom has left the team for a few games to deal with a “family matter” so Zane McIntyre has been called up from Utica. Adam Gaudette will most likely be in the press box in exchange for Tyler Motte. It’s early enough in the season to get some games in so it probably isn’t the worst thing ever to happen.
The PP2 unit also saw Micheal Ferland as a net-front option. He just needs the goalz, so Travis Green is trying everything to start a spark.
Antoine Roussel has been placed on LTIR to make the numbers work for Vancouver up in the accounting office.
Thatcher Demko will be the Canucks starter until at least the weekend.

GAME NOTES AND A STAT OR TWO
- There are plenty of opportunities for the Canucks to make their mark against Detroit tonight. In fact, it’s practically first blood for almost every single player on the team. Only Elias Pettersson (two goals) and Bo Horvat (one goal) are the only current players that scored on Detroit a season ago. Ben Hutton and Antoine Roussel were the other two.
- Ken Holland was apparently already a front-runner for the GM of the Year award so why not keep that train going? Alex Edler for Norris? Why not? Edler has two goals, two back of the league-lead. But yeah, maybe wait a bit before deciding those things.
- Much talk has been made about Vancouver’s special teams, more so the power-play. Well, it’s operating at a 7.1% clip. On the flip side, the Canucks PK is third in the NHL at 92.3%. Thankfully, they’ve only been down a man or more 13 times so far but they’ve been effective. Vancouver has been a lot better defensively to start the season which has shown on the scoreboard on both sides. The goals are likely to start coming for the Canucks but they’re being kept away when they’re down.
- J.T. Miller and Quinn Hughes are leading the charge in Corsi for the Canucks and both are among the top players in the NHL. Miller has a 61.54 rating, good enough for a top-20 position while Hughes is not far behind with 60.34%, which is 9th among all defensemen.
- For whatever reason, tonight feels like one of those nights. You know, the one that has all the special stuff. The one that has a performance for the ages. If tonight is indeed one of those nights, Quinn Hughes might want to make his mark. If Hughes manages to score five points this evening, or heck, in the next year and a half, he would become the youngest NHL defenseman to record his first five-point game. Glen Wesley, Paul Coffey, and Bobby Orr are the top-three on that list. No big deal.

It’s official:
MY 94 CENTS
Things are going right for the Canucks right, how long that will last is anyone’s guess. I am looking forward to seeing Thatcher Demko get a few starts earlier than expected along with a defense that hasn’t played with him either. Brock Boeser might wanna channel his inner Daniel Sedin and put up a four-spot against the Red Wings. This game won’t be on PPV so more people can see it.
Not really a massive Alex Biega fan so you won’t see me hyping him up. He’s good but he WAS the 7th defenseman.
Has anyone else noticed how defensively responsible the Canucks have been? No Norris trophy winners but they’re playing full-on zone defense right now and it’s working.
AND ANOTHER THING…
Like this a lot
No surprise early on, Quinn Hughes has been dominant. NHL Ranks, D-Men: 60.34 CF% - 5th 62.23 xGF% - 7th 61.82 SCF% - 7th 42.51 CA/60 - 4th 158.66 PP CF/60 - 1st #Canucks
