THE INTRO
Happy Friday!
The Canucks get right back at it tonight as they travel to the Shangrila that is Winnipeg to take on the Jets. Tyler Myers will take on his old team for the first time and after a bad showing against the Blackhawks one night ago, there may be some new faces inserted into the lineup that will see the Jets for the first time as well.
The schedule is finally starting to show what the Canucks are made of and despite recent efforts and facing a less than stellar Jets team this evening, a bounce-back throttling of the team from the ‘Peg will go a long way.

Dustin Byfuglien is out for a few months with ankle surgery. Mason Appleton is on IR with a broken foot suffered while playing football at the Heritage Classic. Classic Mason, amiright? Logan Shaw was recalled. Mark Letestu is on IR with a mysterious ailment. Cholera hasn’t been around for awhile so he doesn’t have that.
Bryan Little is on IR for a few games after taking a puck to the head earlier this week. Joona Luoto was recalled from Manitoba.
Connor Hellebuyck should backstop the Jets this evening.

GAMES NOTES AND STAT OR TWO
  • When the Canucks score first, they are undefeated this season. It would be wise to score the opening goal. That being said, the Canucks have given up the opening goal 11/16 times so far. There’s lots of talk about sustainability and this is an area that is quite sustainable so curbing this trend would be in their best interest.
  • The Canucks have spent the most time of any team this season on the power-play. They have spent 114 minutes with the man-advantage which equates to almost two full games with a man up. Based on their opportunities thus far combined with goals, the Canucks are on pace to score just under 77 power-play goals this season and finish with a 22% success rate. That’s good for 5th last season and five percentage points above what they did a season ago.
  • Tyler Myers has played nine career games against the Jets when he was with Buffalo. In that time, he scored one goal and two assists; the goal coming on the power-play along with an assist. He hasn’t registered a point since the game against San Jose and before that was the first game against the Blues. Myers is part of the highest event defensive pairing in the league so he needs to start converting on his chances.
  • Jake Virtanen is having a great start to the year. He has goals in five of eight games recently and he’s proving he can hang with the NHL’s elite on a line with Bo Horvat. Travis Green has shown a higher trust in Jake this season and the confidence Virtanen has shown is quantifiable.
  • If ever there was a time for the Canucks to get back in the driver’s seat, it’s tonight. Vancouver hasn’t beaten the Jets in eight games dating back to 2016/17. What’s it going to take to crush the Jets? Quinn Hughes on the PP.

MY 94 CENTS
Elias Pettersson took a slashing penalty last night so his Lady Byng run is officially over. Now he can focus on the points again.
