CANUCKS ARMY PRESEASON GDT III – CANUCKS @ FLAMES

Well, things have been going OK lately. It is preseason after all, so none of these victories really matter. Of course, there’s only one to speak of, and somehow even that barely happened. The Golden Knights did a number on the baby Canucks who were handed their first loss of the exhibition circuit. Off they go to Calgary to take on the Flames. As Calgary doesn’t have to make a global trip to play any games this week, they’ll have a decent selection of players to choose from to toy with the Canucks.
But that’s why they play the games, and maybe this is the game where Thatcher Demko stands on his head (potentially literally) and keeps the Canuck in this one.

LINE COMBINATIONS
Nikolay Goldobin will get another chance up front, and he has to be better. Goldobin won’t get too many more chances to showcase himself without the spotlight of the rest of the regulars in the lineup. Not exactly now or never but for a flashy player like he is, there needs to be substance, or it’s off to the AHL. Brock Boeser has basically earned his spot on this team but they need “good” players in the lineup and he fits the bill.
Jake Virtanen is back to the rink where his legacy began. Anton Rodin and Jayson Megna look to be his linemates this evening which may or may not turn out to be a good thing.
Demko may get the full game.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
- If the preseason was nicknamed the Igloo League like they nickname the MLB preseason leagues, Brock Boeser would be the leading scorer in the Igloo League. Tied for first with three goals and leading the preseason scoring race with five points, he’s tearing up the minor circuit before he officially becomes a threat for real in October. Boeser has been everything the Canucks have asked of him and more. This kid is something special and hopefully, he’s here for a long time.
- On the back end, Jordan Subban is a bit of Jekyll and Hyde on the ice. He’ll amaze you with his moves and flashy scoring touch but then he gets burned for multiple goals that really, he shouldn’t have. It’s been said a lot but Jordan Subban is on thin ice (no pun there, I swear) to make the Canucks… ever. He may carve out a smaller NHL career (seriously did not mean to pun again) but the Canucks can’t be happy with just his offensive talent. He’s a defenseman and he doesn’t do defenseman things very well.
- Darren Archibald is in the lineup or so it says on that paper. Two things will absolutely happen tonight: He’ll fight someone and he’ll score. Archibald is trying to inch his way back as a NHLer and if he stays the course he just might get a chance to be on the big club.
- Saddledome officials shut the arena down mid-game because talks for a new stadium officially are cut off. It’s entirely possible and it might even make the highlight reel.
- Sunday’s game against the Golden Knights may be a precursor for what the rest of the baby Canucks preseason will look like. The long and short of it is: there will be many more goals, potentially on both sides, potentially just on the other side. You’ve been warned.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
Oh hey, Shinkaruk scored a goal too!
Well, he’s still there. Something to be said for that. I don’t know what exactly, but something. Really wish Markus Granlund had a take on this.
MY TAKE
There wasn’t much to say after the debacle against the Golden Knights. The Flames will want to show off for their fans and sticking it to the Canucks is always a priority for them. Jordan Subban needs a big game as does Olli Juolevi but Olli hasn’t had that at all this year so he’ll get another try next camp.
SCORE PREDICTION
Losing to Calgary the way they did to Vegas probably isn’t a recipe for success but it does make the post-game a bit longer. Canucks squeak it out in shootout 4-3.
