It was bound to happen eventually! Entering the night without a regulation loss, the Canucks dropped this one 4-3 to the St. Louis Blues. 

With Sven Beartschi scratched, both Jared McCann and Jake Virtanen suited up for the Canucks. The last time two teenagers were in the line-up was 1988 and one of them was Trevor Linden. Baertschi’s stint in the press box also allowed Derek Dorsett to move up to the second line. 

On that uneasy note, let’s take a look at how this one went down. 

The start of the game was pretty dull. Jori Lehetera opened the scoring halfway through the first and the Blues doubled their lead with this nice passing play. The 2-0 goal came as a result of an unsuccessful Alex Edler stretch pass and marked the first time that he and Chris Tanev have been on for a goal against together all season. It sure was pretty, though. 

After the Canucks went down by 3, Derek Dorsett fought Robert Bortuzzo, giving the team the momentum they needed to do this: 

Yes, Brandon Sutter scored his 100th career goal in his 500th career game! His shorthanded tally gave Canucks fans their first taste of the new personalized goal songs. Sutter has opted to celebrate his goals with Tim McGraw’s “I Like It, I Love It”. 

The third period was a roller coaster. 30 seconds after Kyle Brodziak made this game look like it was over, Jared McCann scored at 16:44 of the third period, putting the Canucks within two. At this point the game still actually looks like it’s over, but it was a nice goal. Plus, Jared McCann’s goal song of choice is amazing and will hopefully playing a lot at Rogers Arena this season. 

With 28 seconds left in the game, Daniel Sedin scored, bringing everyone’s hopes up. 

Despite an excellent and even later chance by Daniel Sedin, the Canucks did not manage to take the game to overtime and leave pointless for the first time in the young season. 

That 4-3 goal should have been met with some Jojo from the speakers, in my opinion. 

Ben Hutton is such a smooth young man. He wasn’t perfect tonight, but he has a treat to watch so far this year. 

Both Jake Virtanen and Jared McCann were also a lot of fun to watch tonight. 

Virtanen had a couple of opportunities to net his first and even got a look on the first unit powerplay. Soon, Big Country. Soon.

Speaking of the powerplay, the Canucks really could use someone like Yannick Weber. 

The second line is also definitely not improved by the addition of Derek Dorsett. 

They had to lose eventually. By making it close at the end, the Canucks definitely made this one feel a lot more exciting than it actually was.
