Not only did the Vancouver Canucks even their series with the Calgary Flames in emphatic fashion with a 4-1 win Friday night, but there’s also some legitimate hatred in this series now! For a recap of Vancouver’s series-tying win and a look at the chaos to close out the night, read after the jump.

Highlights

Quick Hits

  • Like last game, the Canucks came out flying and out-played Calgary pretty severely. Unlike last game, Vancouver capitalized on their chances and put Calgary behind early. Daniel Sedin fired a wrister past Hiller to give Vancouver a 1-0 lead, and then the second powerplay unit buried a puck through Hiller to put Vancouver up 2-0.
  • That was all they’d need, as Eddie Lack would be excellent once again, stopping 22 of 23 shots he faced. Ronalds Kenins also scored from nearly the same spot on the ice as Daniel Sedin, and Radim Vrbata would add an empty netter to lift Vancouver to a 4-1 victory.
  • The Canucks remained in firm control from start to finish, but let’s be honest: nobody is going to be talking about that given the chaos that ensued in the dying moments.
    • Between Kris Russell crosschecking Nick Bonino and Michael Ferland running around, the temperature of this game was bound to reach a boiling point some time.
    • After a rather innocent looking scrum in front of Eddie Lack, tensions that had been building for most of the night flared, causing Brad Richardson to pair off with Matt Stajan, while Deryk Engelland grabbed Derek Dorsett. You can see what went down here.
    • Dan Hamhuis, left without a dance partner, made an odd choice to jump in to the Dorsett-Engelland fight with the ref watching. The league rules dictate that a game misconduct will be assessed for a third-man in infraction, which is the penalty assessed to Hamhuis on the official game sheet.
    • At the time of this writing, Deryk Engelland has been assessed three game misconducts, which carry an automatic one game suspension. It remains to be seen if this is simply an error though.

Conclusion

Vancouver played a much better game start-to-finish tonight and will look to make it two wins in a row on Sunday in Calgary. Also, it remains to be seen what happens in terms of supplemental discipline for both teams in the coming days. Whatever happens, it should be entertaining.
