Canucks Army Monday Mailbag: July 18th

By J.D. Burke

The Canucks locked up a goalie for exposure in the expansion draft, added to their depth in Utica and announced the signing of Michael Carcone. As far as the middle of July goes, that qualifies as a doozy of a week. What wild antics will the Canucks get up to in time for next week’s mailbag?!
Well, they would hope to have added a second line winger in that time. Preferably an established goal scorer with a little sandpaper to their game. So too would they like to offload one of their less than desirable contracts. Them and every other team though, right?
Well, let’s talk about some of what they’ve done in the meantime and some of what they plan to do in future. You’ve got questions, I’ve got answers. You know the drill.
Sure, why not? I mean, if they make an objectively good deal that tips the scale in their favours, then what am I or anyone else to complain about? As an aside, I take issue (I’m not that upset, really) with the idea that the people in this space dislike everything the Canucks do by virtue of the Canucks doing them. That said, this might not be what Liam is getting at, and if that’s the case, consider this an apology in advance. We battle with that sentiment daily, so I’m perhaps a bit guarded on the issue.
Anyways, I’m a little antsy about the prospect of the Canucks expressing interest in Evander Kane. That’s a deal they lose no matter what in my eyes. More on that later this week, though.
Jason Botchford of The Province alluded to the possibility that the Canucks were exploring the market for a scoring winger and named Gabriel Landeskog as one such player specifically. That more than matches the description of what the Canucks are looking for.

The price would be steep. Start with Chris Tanev and you might have the framework in place. Surely that doesn’t do the trick by itself.
Well, I’m not so sure about an ‘Alex Churros Night’ but I’m all for honouring Alexandre Burrows and all he’s done for the Canucks and this city. Like, I’m very, very glad the Canucks never bought him out. That’s great. Now, with one year remaining on his contract, they have the ability to plan for a night to honour his time as a Canuck. I’d circle the Canucks last home game of the season as that moment.
I’m not the biggest fan of the Canucks most recent draft. That said, with the massive steps Nikita Tryamkin and Brock Boeser made this season and the addition of Olli Juolevi, the Canucks’ prospect pool has improved. Of this much, there is no doubt.
Well, the Canucks are trying their absolute best to ditch Luca Sbisa and the remaining two years on his contract. The problem isn’t so much the player or the term, as it is the $3.6-million associated with the privilege. That’s a lot of money for a third pairing defenceman.
With the addition of Troy Stetcher and Olli Juolevi, one has to wonder how much room there is in the Canucks organization for Jordan Subban. Not sure how far that gets you, but he’s a valuable trade asset to be sure. Similarly, Andrey Pedan’s still unsigned, though the Canucks secured his rights with a qualifying offer. Again, though, you’re not getting an awful lot for Pedan.
