CANUCKS ARMY GDT# 64 – CANUCKS VS. LEAFS (RETRO EDITION)

By Always90four
Feb 13, 2016, 16:08 ESTUpdated:

It’s finally back! Crystal Clear Pepsi The skate has returned and what better way to show it off than against the lowly Leafs and their Phaneuf-less defense. We’ve all seen the duds leading up to today and we approve 100%. Trevor Linden will not be lacing them up tonight to play alongside the Sedins but he’ll surely cherish this one.
Let’s do this for real, again.

PUCK DROP: 4PM (HONESTLY, LET’S STOP THIS)
QUINN’S CHOICES
Sadly, Alex Edler and Brandon Sutter won’t get to wear the iconic skate jersey today as they are out 6-8 weeks with fibulas and broken jaws respectively. Yannick Weber and Alex Friesen were called up to round out the healthy bodies. Alex Biega and Jared McCann should stay in but maybe just maybe Friesen gets his first NHL game experience. What a way to start your career!
Ryan Miller is playing the role of Kirk McLean and if you saw his get up, you’d approve.

Nazim Kadri should be ready to “cut” back into the lineup after missing his last game due to “injury”. Former Canuck Michael Grabner is questionable to play. New Leaf Jared Cowen, who came over in the Phaneuf trade, will not play, but does it even matter? Gilmour couldn’t even beat the Canucks.
James Reimer is the expected starter and will not don a special looking jersey, nor do we care.

REASONS TO LOVE THE SKATE
- 20 years, has it been that long? The iconic skate logo has returned if for only one evening and we are ready. Members of the 95-96 team will participate in a ceremonial puck drop which sounds great, but really they’re a bit over done. #freetheskate
- He pulls the end to end dipsy doodle move a lot but if Bo Horvat has any tricks up his sleeve this evening, rocking the skate jersey and doing it…AND SCORING…would go a long way in Canucks fan’s hearts. Maybe Pavel will be watching/giving out pointers?
- Tonight marks Henrik Sedin’s 1141th game played in a Canucks jersey, kind of a big deal. How this team, and Henrik, have changed, hey?Henrik Sedin meets with #Canucks TV as he gets set to become the franchise leader in games played.https://t.co/AjzTzue4Fk— Vancouver Canucks (@VanCanucks) February 12, 2016;
- Jake Virtanen has been the poster boy for the skate unveiling for a while now and like Bo Horvat, having a big game against the Leafs in the “iconic” skate jersey will further the great memories we all have of better times…in the skate jersey.
- I REALLY wanted to have a “16” stat to pay tribute to Linden in his “iconic” skate jersey days but the best I could do was 15 – Bo Horvat’s rank overall for faceoff percentage. That is a good number. Speaking of #15, Jim Dowd wore that number during his skate tenure. He was not very good, 1G and 6A in 38 games
- Radim Vrbata isn’t exactly tearing up the NHL right now and he should be due to break out, his PDO suggests he’s underperforming at 96.6…..hey….96? Why, Pavel Bure wore that number in the “iconic” skate jersey. What a coincidence. Did I go through the ENTIRE Canucks roster to find a 96 stat? No. Did I stop as soon as I found ONE person that fit that criteria….ok you got me there.
- Oh, and it’s Canucks/Leafs on a Saturday night so its definitely worth the watch. Leafs suck!

ALWAYS90FOUR’S TAKE
The Leafs are due for a win in……ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!?!?!? There is no way the Canucks lose retro skate night. This is not a jinx, this is my handle, this is what we all live. The skate will never die and what a great way for it to live on in Canucks history. Nucks take this 5-1.
