Good road trip eh? Let’s put everything aside and just talk about tonight ok? Deal. The Canucks actually got a win the last time they faced the Broad Street Bullies and they scored more than one goal AND Bo Horvat scored. Could this be the writing on the proverbial wall? Quite possibly. Vancouver is looking for answers of any kind and its fan base just wants to know that their heart is still beating.
I really don’t know what to expect in this one so let’s just hope for something to keep us going, things COULD get better right?

LINE COMBOS

Doesn’t seem to matter who’s on the ice lately with trainwreck after trainwreck occuring. The last time the Canucks played Philly, Jake Virtanen scored his first NHL goal; he’s not even with the team right now. Being utilized on Team Canada is better for him, a lot better. Bo Horvat could use some deja vu to bring him out of an eternal funk. There needs to be some desperation hockey, the kind you play when you’re about to get knocked out of the playoffs….something this year’s Canucks team won’t have to worry about.
Jacob Markstrom is expected to start. Willie Desjardins obviously knows he has two goalies now.

Sam Gagner (concussion) may be back in the lineup, check later today. Rosters similar in point production, the Flyers show more promise in their lineup than Vancouver. Claude Giroux isn’t the best player in the league anymore, was he even? But he still has a sick shot! Philly has that type of roster that if you don’t follow them closely, any name you don’t recognize is probably due to bust a slump. Get where I’m going with this?
After starting 4 straight, Michal Neuvirth should get the night off and Steve Mason, I expect, will start.

REASONS TO WATCH THIS GAME

  • My job is to get you primed for the game and despite the Canucks playing like absolute garbage, I intend to fulfill my duties. 1) Bo Horvat is D…U…E. I’ve probably said this every single game but he is. The last time he scored was indeed against the Flyers, his 2nd of the season, so if I’m looking to bust a lengthy slump, I’d do it tonight.
  • Usually the Canucks have played the Flyers on New Years Eve and done horribly bad on that day. I remember a few lopsided ones in favor of Philly. This one is mid December so that has to mean something right?
  • 4 goals is a pretty popular amount when the Canucks and Flyers meet. The last 2 Canuck wins against the Flyers had 4 goals, Philly’s last home win against the Canucks, Vancouver scored 4 and their last win in Vancouver THEY scored 4. Kinda weird.
  • You’re fantasy football playoffs are over, like mine, and you could care less how the rest of the league does. Seriously, the Canucks need you; they’ll always be there. Your fantasy team will look totally different next year. Im going to go cry right now.
  • Jared McCann might not finish the season in Vancouver. Watching this team suffer this bad can’t be good for his development. This may be one of the last games we see him in until at least January maybe longer…..cherish him.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

My boy Tyrell Goulbourne, former Kelowna Rocket, with his teammates on the road in the AHL. Love that guy. Canucks would too!

MY TAKE

Going with that weird stat, I’m taking a risk and saying the Canucks win 4-2. I don’t think the defense can manage a shutout so I’m calling for a few goals. One by that Ghost guy in Philly. The Sedins will be on the score sheet, Edler too! Burrows and Horvat both score. If this all happens, you might want to tune in to my next GDT.

WHAT’D I MISS?

Oh ya, Jake Virtanen probably won’t be back again this season. For the same reasons McCann should be returned, Jake needs development, not discouragement. He’s off to the World Juniors in Finland where he’ll play wing on Brayden Point’s line. Team Canada just got instantly better. (Side note) After the Juniors, expect the Kelowna Rockets to make a push for Point in an effort to return to the Memorial Cup. Heard it here first.
