Penticton, BC — Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin spoke alongside president Jim Rutherford and head coach Rick Tocchet for the official kick-off of training camp 2024 on Wednesday night.
All three had plenty to say, but Allvin opened the press conference with a prepared statement in which he shared which players would be unavailable for day one of training camp tomorrow.
On top of Dakota Joshua, who yesterday shared that his testicular cancer diagnosis and subsequent offseason surgery would keep him away from the start of camp, Allvin also said that Thatcher Demko, Teddy Blueger, and Cole McWard aren’t quite ready to go just yet.
First, on Demko, who has been the subject of plenty of speculation this summer, Allvin said the Canucks’ starting netminder preferred to give an official update himself tomorrow, and asked to speak to the media in order to do so. We should finally get some clarity on Demko’s injury when he speaks on Thursday.
Allvin also said that Teddy Blueger, who the club re-signed to a two-year deal this past offseason, would be unavailable, as he underwent surgery this offseason to treat a minor lower body injury. Allvin believes Blueger will only be out about a week.
Allvin also said that right-shot defenceman Cole McWard, who was held off the Canucks’ Young Stars Classic roster, is week to week with a lower body injury after a minor procedure over the offseason as well.
Canucks brass spoke for nearly 30 minutes, and we’ll have plenty of content coming your way this evening as we recap everything that went down this evening. We will also be on location for all four days of Canucks camp starting tomorrow, so keep it locked right here at CanucksArmy all weekend long!
Camp opens with on-ice sessions tomorrow from the South Okanagan Events Centre beginning at 9:30 AM.
