Team Canada is calling in some reinforcements.
After being on the losing end of the biggest upset in World Juniors history on Friday night, Canada has officially added Vancouver Canucks prospect Sawyer Mynio to their roster. The news comes as it was revealed that Matthew Schaefer, who exited last night’s game with an injury, will miss the rest of the tournament with what TSN’s Bob McKenzie believes to be a collarbone injury. Schaefer will miss 2-3 months, according to McKenzie.
The 17-year-old left-shot defenceman was a key part of Canada’s blueline, and following the disastrous shootout loss on Friday night, Schaefer’s absence for the rest of the tournament makes Canada’s path to Gold that much more difficult. Stepping in to fill his spot on the roster is Mynio, who the Canucks selected in the third round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. Mynio was named captain of the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds this season, and is up to 19 points through 18 games to this point.
In addition to Mynio, Canada also added Carson Rehkopf (Kraken prospect) and Carson Bjarnason (Flyers prospect) to their officially registered full roster. Here’s hoping whichever these players can help prevent anymore disasters like the one we saw on Friday night, when Canada gave up two power play goals to Latvia to allow the game to go into overtime.
Latvia consciously chose not to get in on the forecheck all game long, and their game plan of making Canada beat them at 5v5 while hoping for the best on the man advantage worked out perfectly in the end. Canada struggled to penetrate the middle of the ice as Latvia collapsed back. Latvia blocked shots, made smart reads, and played a style that ultimately allowed them to walk away with the victory last night.
And of course, the shots that did get through were stopped by Latvia’s goaltender, Lindards Feldbergs, who currently plays with the Sherbrooke Phoenix of the QMJHL. If there’s one thing Latvian hockey has steadily produced, it’s excellent goaltenders. Feldberg’s 55 saves on 57 shots — not to mention stopping all eight Canadian shooters in the shootout — suggest that he could be one of them.
