On Monday morning, the Vancouver Canucks announced Quinn Hughes as their 15th captain in franchise history. Alongside Rick Tocchet and Patrik Allvin, Hughes was made available to media at 10 AM.
Hughes, who turns 24 in October, succeeds Bo Horvat as the 15th captain in Canucks franchise history. The former captain turned New York Islander took to Instagram to congratulate Hughes shortly after the announcement came down.
“Couldn’t of happened to a better person! Well deserved @_quinnhughes happy for you brother,” Horvat wrote.
“I talked to Bo [Horvat] last night,” said Hughes in his press conference. “He’s a great teammate and a great person and he never complained about anything and just went on about his business.”
Hughes also spoke about what an honour being named captain is for him, and Rick Tocchet and Patrik Allvin spoke about why now felt like the right time to give Hughes the C. We will soon have full coverage from today’s press conference on CanucksArmy.
Drafted by the Canucks with the seventh overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Hughes has tallied 26 goals and 215 assists — good for 241 total points — through 283 NHL games with the Canucks. He’s already broken multiple Canucks records, and this past season, he broke the Canucks’ single-season franchise record for most points by a defenceman by tallying 69 points in 69 games. Hughes finished the 2022-23 season with 76 points in 78 games.
Hughes finished ninth in Norris Trophy voting this past season and was second to only Norris winner Erik Karlsson for the NHL lead in points by a defenceman.
