Hockey season rolls on throughout the world bringing about another handful of games for the young players in the Vancouver Canucks system. Every week during hockey season since the beginning of the 2013-14 NHL campaign, Canucks Army has posted a weekly prospects report, and every week the same writer has hunted down the stats and various factoids, tirelessly assembled them in a single document, and handed it off to one of several different editors to transform into something readable for the masses.
That is until this week, as I have been granted the honourable yet daunting task of following in Josh Weissbock’s shoes. Our missing comrade, off on a new adventure with BFF Money Puck to right the wrongs of some lucky NHL organization, bestowed this report on to me, at least for the time being.
Josh’s interest in prospects brought him to Canucks Army and guided the bulk of his work. Right from the get-go, his work was detailed and engaging, and naturally rife with spelling and grammatical errors.
A little over two years later, the Prospect Report finally got a title: Blackfish, whatever that means. I assume it’s something very clever.
If it seems like I’ve been waxing poetic about Josh and MP a lot lately, it’s because I have been. In fact, I’ve made reference to them in each of my last four articles. Deal with it.
And MP (I know you’re reading), if it seems like Josh is getting the bulk of my sappy tributes, don’t worry: you’ll get yours.
Without further ado, let’s get into that thing that you probably came here to see: prospects and stuff.

  • Carl Neill hit an apparent bump in the road this week, going pointless in consecutive games for the first time all season. He finished the week with a single assist in three games and fell below the point per game mark for the first time since November 20th. Regardless, he’s having a hell of a season, especially for a fifth round pick.
  • Dmitry Zhukenov picked up a pair of assists in two games this week. His goal scoring has ticked upwards lately, which I assume improves his PCS. Unfortunately, that information is proprietary now so I can’t say for sure (sad face). In any case, he’s on a three-game point streak.
  • Tate Olson, the seventh-round pick from this year’s draft in also having a good season. His Prince George Cougars have won eight of their last ten games, and he has nine points in his last nine games. Coincidence? I have no idea. Olson had three points in three games this week.
  • Guillaume Brisebois hasn’t exactly lit it up this season, but he has been getting better as the months go on. This week he had two points in two games. Last Friday he had his first two-assist effort of the season – it was also only his second multi-point night of the year.
  • Kyle Pettit also played hockey this week, and he had two penalty minutes to prove it. He also took zero shots on net, though he won 22 of 34 faceoffs (65 per cent). Props to the OHL for collecting faceoff data now, by the way, it sure is useful *glares at AHL*

  • Brock Boeser is a golden god, and I mean that as respectfully as possible. The UND Fighting Hawks played twice last weekend and Boeser contributed three goals, and they were all #nice. I mean jeez, this guy can lean into a shot. He currently leads all NCAA freshmen in goals, and is just three off of the national lead.
  • Adam Gaudette played twice last weekend, earning no points and taking seven shots on net. To be fair, he was playing against Thatcher Demko in both games, and Demko is freakishly good.
  • Mike Williamson played in one game last week, earning his first point of the season (an assist). He had previously missed 11 games with what I assume was an injury (nobody has told me otherwise).
  • Matthew Beattie still hasn’t played a game this season, which I assume is also due to injury.

  • Rodin played in one game last week, earning a -2 rating in just 11:25 of ice time. He did not suit up at all for Brynas IF’s game on Saturday. Combined with the fact that 11:25 is nearly eight whole minutes under Rodin’s average ice time for the season, could he be banged up? Let’s go to Sweden to find out:

  • Nikita Tryamkin played three games last week, racking up five shots, six PIMs and 11 hits, but no points.
  • Lukas Jasek scored his first professional goal ever this week, so congratulations to him, and also to JD for always believing in him.

Not a whole lot went on with the prospects in Utica last week. Nick Jensen scored a goal, and Alex Grenier’s empty netter tied the all-time franchise record for goals (38). Vey finally got off the schneid yesterday and Gaunce had a couple of assists in his return from injury.
