A few days after Vancouver Canucks general manager Ryan Johnson appointed Manny Malhotra as the 23rd head coach in franchise history, it appears he has added another body to their front office staff.
First reported by PuckPedia, NHL player agent Daren Hermiston is expected to move from The•Team into a front office role for the Canucks.
Hermiston’s exact role remains unclear at this time. Shortly after, Donnie & Dhali’s Rick Dhaliwal reported that his job title is something along the lines of director of player development and player performance.
Hermiston, 39, is an NHLPA-certified player agent with The•Team – formerly known as Wasserman Hockey – who currently serves six NHL players. Among his clients are Canucks forward Arshdeep Bains, Dallas Stars forward Christian Fitzgerald, Montreal Canadiens forward Tyler Thorpe, Colorado Avalanche forward TJ Hughes, Calgary Flames defenceman Abram Wiebe, and 2024 second-round Pittsburgh Penguins pick Harrison Brunicke.
Bains was previously represented by Harkie Singh, who helped the Surrey, BC native sign a three-year, $816,667 AAV contract. Halfway through his 2024-25 contract year, Bains switched agents and is now represented by Hermiston. The day before NHL free agency, Hermiston helped Bains strike a deal with the Canucks, signing a two-year, $812,500 contract. The first year was a two-year deal, which saw Bains earn $290,000 in the American League in year one, and a one-way contract for the second year, earning him his full $812,500 regardless of where he plays next season.
In his playing days, Hermiston played as a goaltender for the BCHL’s Vernon Vipers in 2005-06. He appeared in four games, finishing with a 1-1 record with a 2.38 goals against average and a .907 save percentage. The Kamloops, BC native jumped to the Western States Hockey League, appearing in 13 games for the Tucson Tilt, recording a 2.23 goals against average, a .929 save percentage, and an 11-2 record.
After two seasons off, Hermiston made his return to hockey, this time playing forward for Thompson Rivers University of the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League. Over two seasons from 2009-2011, Hermiston scored eight goals and seven assists for 15 points in 26 games before hanging up the skates.
