Before the Vancouver Canucks played their season opener in Edmonton, they held a private team meeting to formally announce that Bo Horvat will become the 14th captain in franchise history. Watch the behind-the-scenes footage video.
Beginning with a brief speech from head coach Travis Green describing how they will proceed with the alternate captains to begin the season, the whole team is sitting by and listening to their coach.
Next walks in both Henrik and Daniel Sedin, saying what being the captain of the Vancouver Canucks means while holding a no. 53 jersey with the captaincy stitched on it.
“It’s a great honour for us to be here today to announce the new captain of the Vancouver Canucks. A guy that we have seen grow as a person from day one. Two things we enjoy most about presenting this guy as the new captain is that we know he’s not going to change just because he is the captain. And number two, that we’re going to be here for his first speech as the captain.”
The Sedins are well aware the pressure the captaincy brings, but they believe in Bo.
The new captain continues the ceremony by thanking everyone and describing the experience as humbling. He then goes on to tell the group how excited he is about the team and the current group of players that are on the roster for this new season.
There is no doubt that Horvat will be an extremely stoic leader.
He has a total of 98 goals, 223 points through his 380 career NHL games with the Canucks.
