Vancouver Canucks Trade Deadline 2016: Fun with Numbers

As we sit and wait for something, anything to come down the pipe ahead of Monday’s noon (Pacific time) National Hockey League trade deadline, it seemed like the right time to reflect on past deadlines and have some fun with numbers pertaining to the Vancouver Canucks and their deadline day history.

0: The number of deals Canucks have made on February 29th over the years. That’s because this may be the first time the trade deadline has ever fallen on February 29th. The last time February 29th fell on a Monday was in 1998 and the trade deadline was in the third week of March that season

3: The number of trades Canucks have completed on February 28th in their history

*2011 acquired Max Lapierre and MacGregor Sharp from Anaheim for Joel Perrault and a 3rd round pick

*2011 acquired Chris Higgins from Florida in exchange for Evan Oberg and a 3rd round pick

*1980 dealt Bruce Affleck and Gord Bunyak to St. Louis for an undisclosed amount of cash. I’d love to know all these years later just how much that package fetched

 

5: The most deals Canucks have made at one trade deadline. Brian Burke was forced into action the day after the Todd Bertuzzi-Steve Moore incident

*added Martin Rucinsky from NY Rangers for RJ Umberger and Martin Grenier

*picked up Geoff Sanderson from Columbus for a 3rd round pick

*acquired Marc Bergevin from Pittsburgh in exchange for a 7th round pick

*traded for Sergei Varlamov from St. Louis for Ryan Ready

*added Sylvain Blouin from Montreal for Rene Vydareny

And two years to the day later, Dave Nonis was busy burning up the phone lines offering draft picks to just about anyone who wanted one

*picked up Mika Noronen from Buffalo for a 2nd round pick

*acquired Sean Brown from New Jersey for a 4th round pick

*added Eric Weinrich from St. Louis for Tomas Mojzis and a 3rd round pick

*nabbed Keith Carney and Juha Alen from Anaheim in exchange for Brett Skinner and a 2nd round pick

*acquired Steve McCarthy from Atlanta for a 4th round pick

On April 7, 1995, nearing the end of a lockout-shortened season, Pat Quinn overhauled a roster that was just one year removed from the Stanley Cup Final

*Russ Courtnall from Dallas for Greg Adams, Dan Kesa and a 5th round pick

*Corey Hirsch acquired from NY Rangers for Nathan Lafayette

*Roman Oksuita added from Edmonton for Jiri Slegr

The deals included the arrivals and departures of Sean Burke, Geoff Sanderson and Enrico Ciccone who had been acquired together from Carolina

1: not a deadline deal, but first trade the Canucks ever completed was acquiring John Arbour from Pittsburgh for an undisclosed amount of cash on June 10, 1970 (Arbour suited up for a grand total of 13 games for the Canucks in their inaugural season before they flipped him to St. Louis for cash six months later)
