Vancouver Canucks sign defenceman Travis Hamonic to one-year contract

The Vancouver Canucks have signed defenceman Travis Hamonic to a one-year contract worth $1.25-million, the club announced.

The 30-year-old defenceman, who played the last three seasons for the Calgary Flames, joined the Canucks on a pro tryout and has earned himself a spot on the team.

Known more for his defensive prowess than offensive firepower, Hamonic still put up 42 points in 193 games with the Flames.

Earlier today Hamonic was skating for his second day with Quinn Hughes, with CanucksArmy’s own Faber figuring it’s a likely pairing for tomorrow season opener against the Edmonton Oilers.

“It looks like the defence core is all set with Hughes-Hamonic being the late addition to the Nate Schmidt-Alex Edler and Tyler Myers-Olli Joulevi pairings that we have seen for most of camp,” wrote Faber. “This is a defence core that is much improved from last season and if they are able to stay as healthy as they did last year then they should be just fine in this Canadian division.”
