To the surprise of no one, Quinn Hughes will be adding a major individual award to his trophy cabinet as he takes home the 2023-24 James Norris Trophy.
It’s hard to argue against this choice when the Canucks’ captain was the NHL’s leading scorer among defencemen and finished second on his team in that department behind only JT Miller. This win likely feels a little sweeter for him, knowing he beat out rival Cale Makar for the award, even though the two were only separated by two points on the leaderboard.
This marks the first major individual award Hughes has won in his career so far. Before winning the Norris tonight, he was a finalist for the Calder Trophy in 2020, but finished in second place behind Makar. Suffice it to say that with the way he has been steadily improving with each passing season, this won’t be the last time he wins the Norris Trophy.
As mentioned earlier, Hughes is fresh off his best season to date where he finished with 92 points (17 goals and 75 assists) in 82 games played. A big part of his success was the on-ice chemistry he developed with breakout star Filip Hronek, who also had a career year. With Hronek locked up for the next eight years, the duo is bound to make magic happen and give opponents fights for the years to come.
Hughes’ success continued in the playoffs where he recorded 10 assists in 13 games played.
Hughes becomes the first defenceman in Canucks franchise history to take home the Norris Trophy.
