As expected, the Utica Comets have topped up their forward ranks by signing another player to a pro try-out contract today. According to the ECHL transactions page, Joel Lowry is the latest player to get a look from the Comets.
Lowry is a 6’2″, 185lbs forward who was drafted in the fifth round, 140th overall by the LA Kings in the 2011 NHL entry draft. The 26-year-old son of former Canuck, Dave Lowry, has been bouncing between the AHL and ECHL since the 2015/16 season, having spent time with both the Manchester Monarchs and Ontario Reign.
So far, this season, Lowry has put up 13 goals, and 16 assists, good for 29 points to lead the Monarchs in scoring. Lowry and recent Comets PTO signee Tony Cameranesi have been teammates this season with the Monarchs.
Currently, the Comets are without forwards Darren Archibald, Wacey Hamilton, and Yan-Pavel Laplante, as all three men are injured. To compound matters, the Comets are also without their top line, and top three point getters, Michael Chaput, Nikolay Goldobin, and Reid Boucher, who have all been called up to help the banged-up Vancouver Canucks. This left the Comets with just 12 healthy forwards, hardly ideal. Trent Cull now has an extra forward at his disposal, should he need one.
The Comets are back on the ice on Wednesday at 4:00 pm Pacific to take on the Toronto Marlies. CanucksArmy will have your post-game report following the game.
