Throwback Thursday: This week in 2003, Vancouver Canucks acquire Johan Hedberg

This week in 203 (Aug. 25), the Vancouver Canucks acquired goaltender Johan Hedberg from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Vancouver gave up a second-round pick in the 2004 draft in the trade.

Hedberg’s time in Vancouver, however, was short. He played in 21 games that season backing up Dan Cloutier, who had a stellar year posting a 33-21-6 record and a .914 save percentage.

Hedberg, 30, meanwhile, gave some decent at-bats posting a 8-6-2 record and a .900 save percentage. He appeared in two playoff games for the Canucks going 1-1 with a .922 save percentage.

Interestingly enough, all three goalies on the roster that year — Cloutier, Hedberg and a 23-year-old Alex Auld — appeared in playoff games for Vancouver.

The 2004 lockout saw Hedberg play in Sweden, while the second-round pick Vancouver traded turned into defenceman Alex Goligoski, who has since gone on to have a 13 year NHL career.
