After falling well short of a playoff berth this past season the oddsmakers aren’t optimistic about the Vancouver Canucks’ chances of winning the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history in 2019/20, as they sit well down the opening futures at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Vancouver sits at +4000 (wager $100 to win $4000) on the early 2020 Stanley Cup odds, which puts them ahead of just a half-dozen other teams on that futures list. The Canucks saw a new leading scorer emerge in rookie forward Elias Pettersson this past season as he put up 28 goals and 66 points, but they still managed a record of only 35-36-11 to fall nine points shy of a postseason berth.
However, the team will be counting on young forwards Pettersson, Bo Horvat (27 goals and 61 points) and Brock Boeser (26 goals and 56 points) to push them back toward a postseason appearance in the upcoming campaign. Boeser, though, will be a restricted free agent this summer and will need a new contract. Veteran defenseman Alexander Edler will be an unrestricted free agent in July after he finished fourth in team scoring with 34 points.
The Canucks look to have their goalie tandem for 2019/20 in place, with Jacob Markstrom having one more year on his contract before he hits unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2020. Markstrom played 60 games for Vancouver last season with a 2.77 GAA and a .912 save percentage. Thatcher Demko should get a chance to be Markstrom’s full-time backup.
The Tampa Bay Lightning, coming off a Presidents’ Trophy campaign but an early playoff exit, sit as +800 favourites on the opening Stanley Cup odds for next season, with the Boston Bruins tied with the Vegas Golden Knights at +900 on those NHL odds. The Toronto Maple Leafs sit at +1000, with the St. Louis Blues at +1200 to repeat at the league champions.
The Los Angeles Kings, Montreal Canadiens, and New Jersey Devils are below the Canucks on the early 2020 Stanley Cup odds at +5000, along with the Anaheim Ducks and Detroit Red Wings at +6600, and the Ottawa Senators who round out the futures list at a line of +10000.
