Now that the Vancouver Canucks have some cap space to play with, we’re sure to hear them connected to various players in the rumour mill as July 1st NHL free agency nears.
One of those names — according to Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie and Dhali — The Team — is Seattle Kraken defenceman Carson Soucy.
Soucy is a 28-year-old left shot defenceman that Seattle claimed in the expansion draft from the Minnesota Wild. Listed at 6’5 and 208 pounds, Soucy is a big body who showed an ability to play a bottom four role on a disciplined and defensively sound Seattle defence corps.
Here’s what Dhaliwal had to say:
“The Canucks will be looking for a centreman and a defenceman on July 1st,” said Dhaliwal. “If — capital letters IF — Seattle defenceman Carson Soucy hits July 1st, this is a player the Canucks really like. Big body defenceman at 6’5 208 lbs, he set a career high with 143 hits, led Seattle in hits, career high in takeaways with 29, this has got Rick Tocchet’s type of defenceman written all over him.
“He’s at $2.75 million, you’re not spending $7-8 million on him — he’s going to have a lot of teams after him, I think there’s going to be a bidding war for Carson Soucy, but at $2.75, give him a bump, that’s a player that when you look at Rick Tocchet and what he wants from defencemen, Carson Soucy fits the bill for me.”
Soucy, who hails from Viking, Alberta, averaged 16:18 of ice time per game with Seattle last season, and had a positive control of the shot share with a corsi rating of 52.1% on the season. Soucy really found his footing in Seattle after showing promise during his seasons with the Minnesota Wild. Whether or not the Canucks want to get into a bidding war for Soucy on July 1st remains to be seen, but it sure seems the Canucks will be aggressive in retooling their blue line with their newfound cap flexibility following the buyout of Oliver Ekman-Larsson.
