The Vancouver Canucks created an additional $4 million in cap space following a late Wednesday afternoon trade that sent Ilya Mikheyev to the Chicago Blackhawks. This move gives the Canucks more financial flexibility as they prepare for the upcoming free agency period.
The additional cap space allows the Canucks to focus on re-signing Dakota Joshua, who had a career-high 18-goal, 32-point season in 2023-24. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, “it is believed the Canucks re-engaged attempts to sign him as the trade occurred.” The 28-year-old winger has become a crucial part of the Canucks’ lineup and is seen as a key piece for the team moving forward.
Joshua’s breakout season with Vancouver saw him scoring 18 goals and 32 points in 63 games. He led the Canucks in hits and played a significant role on the penalty kill, demonstrating his value as a versatile and physical player. His partnership with Conor Garland on the third line was particularly effective, with both players performing like top-six forwards. This performance has not gone unnoticed, and Joshua is expected to attract significant interest if he reaches free agency on July 1.
Joshua’s journey to the NHL included playing parts of two seasons with the St. Louis Blues after his rights were traded by the Toronto Maple Leafs. During his time with the Blues, Joshua tallied four goals, five assists, and a plus-minus of +3 in 42 games. His stint in St. Louis helped him develop his game and prepared him for his role with the Canucks.
Joshua signed with Vancouver as a free agent in 2022 on a two-year deal worth an average annual value (AAV) of $825,000. Since joining the Canucks, he has accumulated 29 goals, 26 assists, and a plus-minus of +3 in 142 games. His performance has made him a valuable asset for the team, and re-signing him is a priority for the Canucks’ management.
