Odds and Ends: Higgins PTO, Broadcast schedule and Travis Green

Hockey season is almost here!
Which means some little transactions are happening around the league that likely aren’t worth a full breakdown, but put a couple of them together and we might have something.
I started this ‘series’ in June, of putting some smaller Canucks news stories together in one post to give everyone some tidbits that might’ve slipped through the cracks.
With it almost being September, we have some more!

Chris Higgins signs PTO with Calgary

It was announced today by the Calgary Flames that Chris Higgins would be attending training camp on a professional tryout. He will be in tough to secure a spot with the Flames, as he will have to beat out the incumbent 12 forwards they have plus prospects like Matthew Tkachuk, Daniel Pribyl and Morgan Klimchuk.
But Higgins will be given an opportunity to show that he can still keep up in the NHL after a tumultuous season last year which resulted in Higgins being waived and bought out by the Canucks.
It may not end being with the Flames, but it’s possible he shows enough to entire another team to offer him a base contract as a depth forward.
Higgins had previously played for the Flames in 2009-10 after being acquired from the New York Rangers.

Broadcast Schedule

Last week, Sportsnet released the broadcast schedule for the NHL. The Canucks schedule can be found here.
Nothing really stands out about this year as all 82 games will be available. I still remember when there was a handful of games that just weren’t on TV.
At the moment, there is no broadcast information about the pre-season games.

Travis Green stays with Utica

All summer long, there had been rumours of Utica Comets head coach Travis Green being linked to every job opening in the NHL. We thought we were clear, but then Patrick Roy stepped down and thus another team was looking for a bench boss. Green was linked to this opening, but ultimately the Avalanche decided to hire Jared Bednar, who had just won the Calder Cup with the Lake Erie Monsters.
This is great news for the Canucks, as Green remains at the helm of the Comets for the foreseeable future, and is still an option available to them if the season doesn’t go as planned.
