As the drama surrounding Vancouver Canucks centres Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller continues to unfold – particularly with the recent trade speculation surrounding both players – it appears another team has entered the conversation.
TSN insider Pierre LeBrun spoke on TSN’s Insider Trading segment about the Pettersson/Miller situation and how the Columbus Blue Jackets have emerged in the sweepstakes for one of the players.
“I’d say it’s a little early to say [that any team is the frontrunner for Pettersson], but certainly a team to talk about would be the Columbus Blue Jackets. And it’s not surprising because they’ve got massive salary cap space.
“So, as the Canucks make their rounds and talk to different teams on both J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson, the conversation with the Jackets is on Pettersson. We’ll see whether these preliminary discussions, some of them very recent, can go next level.
“But I think for Columbus, it’s the same question all the other teams that I’ve talked about Vancouver have, including a team like the Buffalo Sabres, who is Elias Pettersson right now? The Pettersson of old warranted that massive extension, but the one we’ve seen over the past year has a lot of teams wondering how much they want to give up.
“What I’m sensing around the market, whether it’s Miller or Pettersson as teams are waiting to see if the Canucks were willing to bring their asking price down on either player before they engage more fully on either player.”
The Blue Jackets have one of the brightest young cores in the league, along with other excellent prospects. If the Canucks are looking to get a couple of solid future assets in return for Petersson, Columbus would be a great fit.
Pettersson continues to underperform with the Canucks this season, as he has just 11 goals and 21 assists for 32 points in 44 games. However, during the team’s three-game win streak, he has two assists with a plus-4 rating and 10 shots on goal.
Vancouver will have until the March 7 trade deadline to decide whether to move on from Pettersson this season and until July 1 before his full no-movement clause kicks in.
