Roberto Luongo, found out today that he is not a Candidate for the Vezina trophy. “Zut Alors” is what I like to imagine he said.
Timmy Thomas, Steve Mason, and Nik Backstrom earned those nominations.
Reasonable minds could conclude that Timmy T and Mason would be in this category, however Nik Backstrom had no reason to be in there anymore than Lou. Considering he plays for Lemaire, which is like being the King in a game of chess.
Despite playing only 54 games, Luongo posted 33 wins, including 8 shutouts. Luongo posted two of those shutouts in the last two games of the year. In November he almost pulled a Boucher posting three shutouts in a row. Canucks expected that Lui would get a nomination, they weren’t expecting him to be a shoe in.
The biggest downfall to Luongo’s season was his inconsistent play. At times he was an average goaltender who would let a soft goal in nightly. At other times he was an unstoppable robot that intimidated even the most offensive teams.
I understand that the Canucks are no longer a mediocre team with a savior in net, but his play this season should still not be overlooked. After being overlooked by the fans for the MVP, Luongo still gets the shaft in the Vezina department.
Hopefully, this will only light a fire under his ass and make Luongo the king cobra of goaltenders in the playoffs. I’m sure a Conn Smythe trophy in his case would ease his disappointments of late.
