The 2018 NHL Entry Draft recently wrapped up in Dallas, and as it was the fifth such event since Jim Benning joined the team, I was interested in looking into what he and his staff have done since their first draft together in 2014.
This article is not meant to praise or disparage the work done by the club in any way. It is merely an exercise to see how the draft has shaken out for the team since Jim Benning took the helm.
The Canucks, like every other team, had 35 picks available to them over those five drafts. After trades and manoeuvres, however, the team actually used a total of 34 picks over that span. Of those 34 picks, Vancouver had a total of six picks in each of the first, fifth, and seventh rounds. They had a total of five picks in each of the third and sixth rounds, and four in round two. The fourth round is where they had their fewest number of picks with just two players being selected there.
In reverse order, counting down from the seventh round, we will take a look at how each round broke down by position. The players’ draft positions are listed in brackets beside their names.
Seventh Round
Six Picks
  • Three Defencemen: Mackenze Stewart (186), Tate Olson (210), Matt Brassard (118).
  • Two Centermen: Brett McKenzie (194), Rodrigo Abols (184)
  • One Goaltender: Matthew Thiessen (192).
Sixth Round
Five Picks
  • Three Right-Wingers: Lukas Jasek (174), Petrus Palmu (181), Artem Manukyan (186).
  • One Centerman: Kyle Pettit (156).
  • One Left-Winger: Jakob Stukel (154).
Fifth Round
Six Picks
  • Five Defencemen: Gustav Forsling (126), Carl Neill (144), Cole Candella (140), Kristoffer Gunnarsson (135), Toni Utunen (130).
  • One Centerman: Adam Gaudette (149).
Fourth Round
Two Picks
  • One Centerman: Dmitry Zhukenov (114).
  • One Defenceman: Jack Rathbone (95).
Third Round
Five Picks
  • Two Defencemen: Nikita Tryamkin (66), Guillaume Brisebois (66).
  • One Right-Winger: Will Lockwood (64).
  • One Centerman: Tyler Madden (68).
  • One Goaltender: Michael DiPietro (64).
Second Round
Four Picks
  • One Goaltender: Thatcher Demko (36).
  • One Left-Winger: Jonah Gadjovich (55).
  • One Right-Winger: Kole Lind (33).
  • One Defenceman: Jett Woo (37).
First Round
Six Picks
  • Two Centermen: Jared McCann (24), Elias Pettersson (5).
  • Two Right-Wingers: Jake Virtanen (6), Brock Boeser (23)
  • Two Defencemen: Olli Juolevi (5), Quinn Hughes (7).
One thing that might jump out at you is that some of the names listed above are no longer Canucks property. In fact, there are ten players listed above who are no longer in the system.
Gustav Forsling and Jared McCann were both moved out in separate trades, while none of Kyle Pettit, Tate Olson, Carl Neill, Brett McKenzie, Rodrigo Abols, Cole Candella, or Jakob Stukel impressed management enough to earn a contract with the club. Mackenze Stewart earned a contract with the team (somehow), but after three lacklustre seasons, the Canucks recently opted not to qualify his contract.
If we look at the picks by position, we can see that the team has selected a total of 14 defencemen, eight centermen, seven right-wingers, three goaltenders, and two left-wingers.
The additions of Jonathan Dahlen, Nikolay Goldobin, and Brendan Leipsic via separate trades may help fill the void on the left side right now, but the Canucks may want to keep their eyes peeled for left-wingers who can help in the future.
Of the 34 players who have been drafted by the Canucks over the past five drafts, seven players have played a total of 541 NHL games. The group has combined for 77 goals and 99 assists to give them a total of 176 points in the league. The traded Jared McCann and Gustav Forsling were responsible for 245 of those games played, putting up 24 goals, and 47 assists to combine for 71 of the 176 points put up by the group.
I thought it might be interesting to see how the Montreal Canadiens, Edmonton Oilers, and Toronto Maple Leafs fared over those same five drafts.
Now, before anyone says anything, we know that the Leafs and Oilers have both had some lottery luck that landed them “Generational Players” while the Habs and Canucks cannot say the same. Keep that in mind when you are looking at point totals for those two clubs. That said, that’s the way the lotto balls bounced, and nothing can change things now.
Montreal Canadiens
The Canadiens used a total of 35 picks over their previous five drafts. This included seven picks in each of the third and fifth rounds, five picks in each of the first, second, and seventh rounds, along with three picks each of the fourth and sixth rounds.
Seventh Round
Five Picks
  • Two Centermen: Jake Evans (207), Brett Stapley (190).
  • One Left-Winger: Jerimiah Addison (207).
  • One Defenceman: Arvid Henrikson (187).
  • One Goaltender: Cayden Primeau (199).
Sixth Round
Three Picks
  • One Goaltender: Hayden Hawkey (177).
  • One Defenceman: Simon Bourque (177).
  • One Centerman: Michael Pezzetta (160).
Fifth Round
Seven Picks
  • Four Centermen: Daniel Audette (147), Matt Bradley (131),  Samuel Houde (133), Cole Fonstad (128).
  • Three Defencemen: Nikolas Koberstein (125), Casey Staum (124), Jarret Tyszka (149).
Fourth Round
Three Picks
  • One Defenceman: Victor Mete (100).
  • One Left-Winger: Jack Gorniak (123).
  • One Centerman: Allan McShane (97).
Third Round
Seven Picks
  • Four Defencemen: Brett Lernout (73), Cale Fleury (87), Scott Walford (68), Jordan Harris (71).
  • Three Centermen: Lukas Vejdemo (87), William Bitten (70), Cam Hillis (66).
Second Round
Five Picks
  • Two Centermen: Joni Ikonen (58), Jacob Olofsson (56).
  • Two Defencemen: Josh Brook (56), Alexander Romanov (38).
  • One Right-Winger: Jesse Ylonen (35).
First Round
Five Picks
  • One Right-Winger: Nikita Scherbak (26).
  • Two Defencemen: Noah Juulsen (26), Mikhail Sergachev (9).
  • Two Centermen: Ryan Poehling (25), Jesperi Kotkaniemi (3).
Montreal has selected 14 defencemen, 14 centermen, three right-wingers, two left-wingers, and two goaltenders since the 2014 draft. Like the Canucks, the Habs have moved out players who they had drafted since 2014, most notably, Mikhail Sergachev in the Jonathan Drouin deal with Tampa Bay.
Of the 35 players selected by the Habs during this span, five players have played in a combined 205 NHL games. They have posted 15 goals, 43 assists, and 58 points as a group.
Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers have selected 33 players in the draft since 2014. During this time they have had six picks in the seventh round, five picks in each of rounds one, three, five, and six, along with four picks in the fourth round and three in round number two.
Seventh Round
Six Picks
  • Two Goaltenders: Kevin Bouchard (183), Miroslav Svoboda (208).
  • Three Defencemen: Ziyat Paigin (209), Vincent Desharnais (183), Philip Kemp (208).
  • One Centerman: Patrik Siikanen (195).
Sixth Round
Five Picks
  • Three Centermen: Tyler Vesel (153), Aapeli Rasanen (153), Skyler Brind’Amour (177).
  • Two Defencemen: John Marino (154), Michael Kesselring (164).
Fifth Round
Five Picks
  • One Centerman: Liam Coughlin (130).
  • One Defenceman: Ethan Bear (124).
  • One Left-Winger: Graham McPhee (149).
  • One Goaltender: Dylan Wells (123).
  • One Right-Winger: Kirill Maksimov (146).

  • One Goaltender: Zach Nagelvoort (111).
  • Two Defencemen: William Lagesson (91), Caleb Jones (117).
  • One Right-Winger: Ostap Safin (115).
Third Round
Five Picks
  • Four Defencemen: Filip Berglund (91), Matthew Cairns (84), Markus Niemelainen (63), Dmitri Samorukov (84).
  • One Goaltender: Stuart Skinner (78).
Second Round
Three Picks
  • One Left-Winger: Tyler Benson (32).
  • One Goaltender: Olivier Rodrigue (62).
  • One Centerman: Ryan McLeod (40).
First Round
Five Picks
  • Two Centermen: Leon Draisaitl (3), Connor McDavid, (1).
  • Two Right-Wingers: Jesse Puljujarvi: (4), Kailer Yamamoto (22).
  • One Defenceman: Evan Bouchard (10).
The Oilers have selected a total of 33 players; 13 defencemen, eight centermen, six goaltenders, four right-wingers, and two left-wingers since the 2014 draft. Five of those players have combined to play 598 NHL games, collecting 176 goals, 322 assists, and 498 points. McDavid and Draisaitl have played a combined 478 NHL games, putting up 162 goals, 301 assists, and 463 points. Thanks, Connor and Leon.
Toronto Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs have taken a different approach than the previous three teams. They loaded up on picks to give themselves more chances to draft NHL players for their system. The Leafs have used 42 picks since 2014. That’s seven more picks than each team was allotted over that span, or, the equivalent of a whole other draft class, numbers wise.
The Leafs had seven picks in each of rounds three and four, six picks in each of rounds two, six, and seven, and five picks in each of rounds one and five.
Seventh Round
Six Picks
  • Two Left-Wingers: Pierre Engvall (188), Nikolai Chebykin (182).
  • Two Right-Wingers: Nikita Korostelev (185), Semyon Kizimov (211).
  • One Defenceman: Ryan O’Connell (203).
  • One Goaltender: Zachary Bouthillier (209).
Sixth Round
Six Picks
  • Three Left-Wingers: Nolan Vesey (158), Jack Walker (152), Pontus Holmberg (156).
  • Two Defencemen: Stephen Desrocher (155), Nicholas Mattinen (179).
  • One Centerman: Ryan McGregor (172).
Fifth Round
Five Picks
  • One Centerman: Dakota Joshua (128).
  • Two Left-Wingers: Dmytro Timashov (125), Vladimir Bobylev (122).
  • Two Defencemen: Fedor Gordeev (141), Filip Kral (149).
Fourth Round

  • One Right-Winger: J.J. Piccinich (103).
  • Three Defencemen: Jesper Lingren (95), Keaton Middleton (101), Mac Hollowell (118).
  • One Centerman: Adam Brooks (92).
  • One Left-Winger: Vladislav Kara (124).
  • One Goaltender: Ian Scott (110).
Third Round
Seven Picks
  • Three Defencemen: Rinat Valiev (68), Andrew Nielsen (65), J.D. Greenway (72).
  • One Right-Winger: Martins Dzierkals (68).
  • One Goaltender: Joseph Woll (62).
  • Two Centermen: Riley Stotts (83), Semyon Der-Arguchinstev (76).
Second Round
Six Picks
  • Two Right-Wingers: Jeremy Bracco (61), Yegor Korshkov (31).
  • Three Defencemen: Travis Dermott (34), Eemeli Rasanen (59), Sean Durzi (52).
  • One Left-Winger: Carl Grundstrom (57).
First Round
Five Picks
  • Three Centermen: William Nylander (8), Mitch Marner (4), Auston Matthews (1).
  • Two Defencemen: Timothy Liljegren (17), Rasmus Sandin (29).
The Leafs have picked 42 players in total; 16 defencemen, nine left-wingers, eight centermen, six right-wingers, and three goaltenders since the 2014 draft. Five of those players have combined for a total of 537 NHL games played. The Leafs picks have put up 164 goals and 246 assists to give them 410 points as a group. The trio of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander make up 488 of those NHL games, along with 397 points.
There are still plenty of players from the four teams listed above who have yet to make their mark in the NHL, so this will be an interesting group of picks to watch over the coming years.
The Canucks drafting appears to be getting better over the last couple of seasons. Here’s hoping that trend continues.
