Detroit Red Wings claim former Vancouver Canucks defenceman Olli Juolevi off waivers

Olli is on the move once again.

The failed fifth overall pick was shipped off to the Florida Panthers back in October, and the club had placed the defenceman on waivers Saturday.

Sunday morning, the Detroit Red Wings stepped up to claim him.

Juolevi appeared in 10 games with the Panthers averaging 12:27 per game, but didn’t register a point.

Drafted by the Canucks fifth overall in 2016, Juolevi is widely considered to be a bust after failing to find his way in NHL. Since being drafted, he only has appeared in 23 games with the Canucks otherwise playing in the American League.

That compares to a number of defencemen selected after him in Mikhail Sergachev, Charlie McAvoy and Jakob Chychrun — all of whom have gone on to play over 285 games at the NHL level.

Movement from players at the top of that class isn’t unheard of. Patrik Laine (2nd), Pierre-Luc Dubois (3rd), Alex Nylander (8th), Sergachev (9th), Logan Brown (11th), Jake Bean (13th) and Luke Kunin (15) are all with teams that didn’t draft them.

The Canucks traded Juolevi for defenceman Noah Juulsen, who has 14 points in 35 games with the Abbotsford Canucks, and Juho Lammikko, who has scored 12 points in 50 games with the Canucks.
