CanucksArmy 2020 Vancouver Canucks prospect rankings: #15 Arvid Costmar

The Vancouver Canucks have drafted high end J20 Swedish players in the seventh round of the 2019 and 2020 NHL drafts.

Arvid Costmar was selected with the 215th pick in the 2019 draft and his stock has been rising ever since.

In his 2018-19 season as an 18-year-old, Costmar put up 26 goals and 24 assists for a total of 50 points in only 29 games while competing in the J20 SuperElit league in Sweden.

This year he has bounced around between the J20 league and the SHL while also having to deal with a Covid outbreak in his organization. For that reason, Costmar will not be competing in the Karjala Cup tournament with Sweden but has received an invite to compete for a spot with Sweden’s U20 team for the World Junior Championships.

He should be a lock on the team as he dominates against players his age. Costmar is a smooth skating centre who plays his best hockey on the power play unit. His wrist shot is as accurate as they come and has a real burst off of his blade.

Costmar is averaging just 5:04 per game this season in six games with Linkoping in the SHL. When he is playing with his J20 team, he is averaging two points per game. He is a centre prospect that could bring some real offence to a lineup if he is able to continue to develop enough to make it over to North America.

He is a long way away from that as he is struggling to get consistent ice time at the SHL level. The good thing is that he is only 19-years-old and has a lot of time to perfect his craft overseas.

Costmar led the J20 SuperElit league in points per game out of players who played at least 10 games last year with 1.72 ppg.

This winter he should be a top six centre on Sweden’s WJC team. He will get power play time and be relied upon to create offence at 5-on-5. Sweden’s team should feature some elite scoring wingers and Costmar will be between two of them. Costmar is also a shorthanded goal machine when he plays against his age group. Sweden should use him on their WJC team as one of the top penalty killers in the tournament and he finds openings to break down the wing and fire his lethal wrist shot.

Costmar has been playing on the wing in the SHL this season and should continue to grow over the next couple years as he gets a bigger role with his SHL team. He’s got a ton of talent and Canucks fans will love to watch him perform at this year’s WJC.

There’s room for him to climb the rankings over the next couple of years and hopefully he is able to make his way over to North America in the next few years.
