It’s been a busy week on the radio this week with former GM Mike Gillis making an appearance on TSN 1040 on Wednesday afternoon.
That was followed up with Francesco Aquilini heading to Sportsnet 650 for a long interview on Thursday morning. They covered a wide variety of things about the Canucks but the one that stood out during the interview was a mention about what the plans were for #22 and #33.
This isn’t a surprise to anyone, as Daniel and Henrik’s jerseys were going to be retired at some point and there were rumours that they would wait until 2019-20, but this gives it a more official idea of what the plan is. Aquilini followed that up with:
“Henrik and Daniel are a big part of this community. They’ve given back so much. They’re iconic player. Iconic players and iconic people. We’re going to do something special for them.”
From the sounds of it, the Canucks want to make sure it’s a big celebration for the two players that have given so much to the organization. With such a large event like this, the organization is ensuring that they can work with the NHL to plan the schedule around it. Maybe that means that former teammates like Roberto Luongo (and the Florida Panthers) visit during that week-long celebration. Who knows what the actual plan is but that would seem like an idea that would need the NHL’s help to plan the schedule around.
Daniel and Henrik would join Trevor Linden (16), Pavel Bure (10), Markus Naslund (19), and Stan Smyl (12) as retired numbers by the organization.
