It appears that the Canucks have signed defenceman Andrey Pedan to a one year deal this afternoon:
Dan Milstein is a Andrey Pedan’s agent, so it’s safe to assume if he is tweeting it – it’s legit.
According to Capfriendly, the deal is for $750,000 at the NHL level and $200,000 at the AHL level with a guarantee of $300,000.
Andrey Pedan is coming off an up and down season with the Utica Comets, where he posted 5 goals and 5 assists in 52 games. After being waived by the Canucks to start the year, Pedan was extremely effective for the Comets, but over the course of the season, his play started to slip. To the point where he was a healthy scratch for a few games through the final few weeks.
His play coupled with the emergence of Even McEneny resulted in these scratches.
This shouldn’t take away from the fact that Pedan was an the Comets number 1 defenceman throughout the 2015-16 and appeared to be in the mix for a spot with the Canucks to start the season.
With Nikita Tryamkin leaving, there is a spot to be had for Pedan. If the Canucks do make any further moves, that should open the door even further for Pedan.
This one year deal is likely the organization giving Pedan one more chance to make the step to the NHL. If he is unable to make the team out of camp, he will likely be given every chance to be the first call up option.
With prospects like Guillaume Brisebois, Jalen Chatfield and possibly Tate Olson and Carl Neill turning pro next season, Pedan can fill the ‘veteran’ role in Utica. While still being available as a stop gap for when injuries occur.
New Canucks head coach Travis Green leaned heavily on Andrey Pedan in 2014-15 and 2015-16, so there is some familiarity there. If Pedan plays up to his potential, he would provide a unique presence in their 5/6/7 spots.
Pedan was acquired from the New York Islanders in November 2014 for Alexandre Mallet and 2016 3rd pick. Which the Canucks got back through a variety of other transactions including Dan Blysma being hired by Buffalo from Pittsburgh. Which Pittsburgh then sent to Vancouver in the Brandon Sutter trade.
