With plenty of other action going on in the world of hockey during the NHL break, we’ve still got plenty to discuss this week when it comes to the topic of Canucks prospects. Thankfully, the other leagues haven’t closed shop, or we’d be going through some unimaginable withdrawal..
So continue past the jump to read the latest in Comets Militia updates, and as always, follow me @nuckprospects on Twitter for the latest in prospect news. Please feel free to send me any feedback on anything prospect related you wish me to cover.

Utica Comets

Note: Since we’re going to be covering games individually on this platform while the Canucks are off, this section looks slightly different than it has in past weeks. The last time the Comets played was an OT loss to the Rockford IceHogs.
They’re back in action tomorrow against Rochester, and then play again on Saturday and Sunday. Make sure you check back in here for more on those contests in the coming days!

Transactions:

  • Yann Sauve, returned on Loan from Vancouver
  • Pascal Pelletier, returned on Loan from Vancouver
  • Kellan Lain, returned on Loan from Vancouver
  • Frank Corrado, returned on Loan from Vancouver
  • Ray Kaunisto, released from PTO

Other:

  • Currently the Comets are in 15th place with 43 points (18-22-3-4). Utica has been outscored 114 to 142 (-28), and have been outshot 1377 to 1429 (-52). They’re controlling 49.07% (acknowledging score effects) of the shots with an on ice shooting percentage of 8.1% and a save percentage of 90.4%.  A simple version of PDO puts them at 98.5%.
  • Their PP is currently at 17.03% (17th place) [which has improved this week] and their PK is 77.78% (28th place), which did not change this week after allowing 3 goals on 16 power play attempts against.
  • In the last week the Comets beat Iowa 3-2 in the SO, shutout Milwaukee 3-0, and lost 4-5 in OT to Rockford (which was covered in more detail earlier this week).
  • Goals scored by Canucks Prospects were: Jensen (x4) and Archibald (x3).
  • Who is that Canuck/Comet on a two-way deal?  Learn more about “the other guy”, Pascal Pelletier. [Vancouver Sun]
  • Nicklas Jensen has had success recently, no surprise as his 2% Sh% was not sustainable. I wrote about his natural hat trick against Rockford, and Drance covered more of his success.  Hear Jensen on Team1040 radio.
  • Eriksson continues to improve as he is tied in the AHL lead for shutouts with 4 and 8th in Sv%.
  • This week was the AHL All-Star Break, no Comets were involved in that.  It’s okay, they didn’t want to participate anyways! No thank you!

    • Bo Horvat was the best OHL prospect scoring 2 goals and 2 assists in three games while going -1 and earning 2 PIM. Should note that while he’s doing that, Valeri Nichushkin is dominating teams in the Olympics. That’s not a knock against Bo by any means, but it’s tough not to wonder what could’ve been..
    • Cole Cassels played three games this week earning 1 goal, 4 assists, +3 and 9 PIM.
    • Jordan Subban played two games notching a single goal, with a -2.  Subban’s play did earn second place in the OHL plays of the week!
    • Dane Fox is now at 90 points after playing 2 games and scoring 2 goals.  He also earned 2 PIM and went +2.
    • Brendan Gaunce had similar stats to Fox this week playing 2 games, scoring 2 assists while earning 2 PIM and going +2.
    • Evan McEneny continues his higher scoring rate in Kingston, with three games this week he earned two assists while going +1 with 2 PIM.
    • On the other end of the spectrum Liberati continues to be a quiet prospect playing 3 games going -3.
    • In the OHL East, Oshawa has clinched a playoff spot and they are first with 73 points.  Kingston is third with 64 points and North Bay is 4th with 62 points.  Belleville is last in the East with 34 points.  In the West Erie and London have also clinched playoff spots with Erie currently in third at 84 points and London in 4th with 77 points.  Erie is 3rd and London is 8th in the CHL Rankings.

    • Guess who’s back, back again. Wes Myron’s back, tell your friends!  After not playing a game all Wes Myron has returned to action. In two games he has 2 assists, 7 SOG and 7 PIM from a fight.  Most exciting of all, check out the photoshop job done on his official ECHL profile photo.
    • Both Blain and Blomstrand are still injured and are currently on the IR.  Neither played this week.
    • Steven Anthony is still injured with St Charles and has not played this week.

    Ronalds KeninsLWSwiss ZSC2236717240.671426
    • Ronalds Kenins starts in the Olympics this week, Thomas Drance wrote about his place with the team here at CanucksArmy.
    • In his first game at the Olympics against the Swiss, Pass it to Bulis had this to say about Kenins: “Ronalds Kenins played a smaller role for Latvia than I expected, playing
just over 10 minutes and finishing with 2 shots on goal. Miks Indrasis,
who was an invitee to the same Canucks camp at which Kenins impressed
and was signed, had 4 shots on goal. Kenins did have one of Latvia’s
best scoring chances, however, just missing the net on the backhand
after a great feed by Girgensons under a sliding defenceman.”
    • Anton Rodins played two games earning a single assist. That burst of offense he had earlier in the season seems to have disappeared.
