As we head into the Christmas break, many of the Canucks prospects schedules continue to slow down.  But with juniors slowing down that only means one thing: The IIHF World Under-20 Championship!  We are back again this week with all the latest in prospect news and updates.
Continue past the jump to see how your favourite prospect is performing.

Kyle PetitC1996-01-1818Erie3093120.4036
  • Cole Cassels did not play any game this week in the OHL as he is finishing up his suspension and has around two games remaining.  He did play in two exhibition games for the World Juniors.  In USA’s 5-2 win over Germany Cassels was credited with an assist.  In the 10-5 win over Sweden Cassels did not play and was released from the team after.  Here’s what ESPN scout Corey Pronman had to say about Cassels:
Cassels — a dual Canadian-American citizen — was invited to play for
the Americans during the summer, but couldn’t attend due to injury. He
then played for Canada in the OHL portion of the Super Series, but after
no invite for the WJC team from Hockey Canada went back to the USA
camp. He’s a very good passer with a decent frame, and plays well on the
penalty kill. It’s questionable if he has the top-end ability at either
end to make this team in a real role, but he’s certainly an intriguing
player.
  • Quiet week this week for Jared McCann who played in 2 games scoring 1 assist and earning 2 PIM.
  • Jordan Subban remains cooled off, having played 2 games, earning a +4 and 2 PIM.  He continues to fall down to 7th in defencemen scoring.
  • Evan McEneny had a quiet week as well playing 2 games and earning a -1 with 4 PIM.
  • Miles Liberati played in 1 game, scoring a goal and earning a -1.
  • Kyle Petit played in 1 game scoring 1 assist and earning a +2.

Anton CederholmD1995-02-2119Portland334370.21-550
  • Jake Virtanen did not play in a WHL game this week, he did play in a Canada World Juniors game scoring 1 goal in the 6-0 win over Switzerland.  Here’s what Pronman had to say about Virtanen:
After an up-and-down start to this WHL season as he overcame shoulder
surgery, Virtanen had a very strong under-20 camp and should be getting a
regular shift here; he was Canada’s best forward at the under-18
championship last year. His speed is elite, he has a great shot and
plays a physical game. He’s not a pull-and-dangle wizard, but he can
make an impact.
  • McKenze Stewart played in 1 game earning a -1 and 9 PIM.
  • No games for Anton Cederholm this week.

Thatcher DemkoG1995-12-0819H-East / Boston College162963342.129-6-143392.72%
  • Thatcher Demko did not play any NCAA games this week.  He is currently with the World Junior’s team, where he looks to hone his skills, and in the two exhibition games for USA Demko made 14 of 14 saves and 14 of 16 saves.  Here’s what Pronman had to say about Demko and for his World Juniors scouting:
Demko is the likely starting netminder here, after sitting as a
third-stringer in last year’s tournament. The Boston College sophomore
has been outstanding through his college career so far. He has the size
and hockey sense to make a lot of stops, and while he’s not going to
make the top-end athletic stops, that’s partly due to his habit of being
in position to square up on most pucks.

  • No games for Nikita Tryamkin or Gustav Forsling this week.  Forsling is currently with Team Sweden at the World Juniors and scored a beauty of a powerplay goal in the game against Canada, and added another in a 10-5 loss to the USA.

The K-Wings coach discusses some of the Canucks prospects in one of their post gamers.
  • Kalamazoo is currently 5th in their division, and 11th in the conference, with a record of 9-14-1-1, good for 20 points in 25 games.
  • This past week the Wings lost 4-5 vs Fort Wayne and 1-4 vs Toledo.  This week the Wings look to play Toledo on Saturday.
  • Curtis Valk played in 2 games scoring 2 goals and 1 assist and still leads the Wings in scoring.  He has earned 9 shots on goal and 2 PIMs.
  • Ludwig Blomstrand played in 2 games scoring 1 goal and 1 assist, 6 shots on goal and 2 PIM.
  • Dane Fox played in 2 games scoring 1 assist, 3 shots on goal and 2 PIM.
  • Jeremie Blain played in 2 games scoring 1 assist, 2 shots on goal and a -2.
  • Patrick Kennedy has 7 goals and 8 assists in 15 games with the Evansville IceMen with 33 shots on goal.
  • Mitch Holmberg has played 3 games since being traded to the Comets (and sent down to the ECHL).  He scored 4 goals and 1 assist earning a +5 and 13 shots in these games.
This looks to be the last prospect report for the year.  With the prospects not playing it is unlikely there will be much news next week.  Look for this report to return in the new year, and in the mean time, look for prospect coverage at the World Juniors to replace it.  I hope you have a happy holidays and hope you have enjoyed all the hard work that goes into these reports.
