Some weeks are going to be jam-packed and full of highlights and exciting things from the Canucks’ prospects.

This happened last week in the Blackfish Prospects Report.

And sometimes other weeks are going to have one assist highlight and a couple of goals from the CHL.

This happened this week…

We didn’t get much from the Vancouver Canucks’ prospects over the last seven days.

There were a lot of games played by the prospects but I don’t think you want to see all of Lucas Forsell’s 19 shifts in a J20 game.

It’s just the waves that come with covering prospects.

We do have a few clips to get to so let’s go there now!

We can show you two goals from last Tuesday. Along with the European leagues fully underway with their regular seasons, we have Champions League play underway as well. Champions League is where teams from all over Europe come to compete against each other in a very soccer-like format.

Let’s first have a look at Filip Johansson’s goal from his CHL action.

The 22-year-old, right-shot defenceman has impressed us this year. He is clicking at a point-per-game rate in CHL play and is a massive minute-muncher for his SHL team.

From what we’ve seen so far this season, we project Johansson to be in Abbotsford next season. He does enough things well and shows that his skating is at a high level against his SHL counterparts. The Canucks don’t really have a right-shot finesse defenceman in their system, and it will be interesting to see how he fits in with AHL play next year.

There’s been a lot of good so far this season from Johansson.

The other CHL scorer was left-shot defenceman Joni Jurmo. He also scored last Tuesday with a strong wrist shot on the power play.

Jurmo was used on the top pairing in this CHL game and showed well with the increased minutes.

After drafting Jackson Dorrington in the sixth round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, the Canucks now hold two prospects with Northeastern University.

Aidan McDonough is considered to be one of the best scorers in NCAA hockey, and captains the Northeastern Huskies.

McDonough had a primary assist on the weekend in a game against Providence.

It’s been a rocky start for the Huskies, who have now dropped out of the top-10 NCAA power rankings after beginning the season in seventh place.

One bright spot has been the aforementioned Dorrington. The left-shot defenceman has impressed us with his physical play, decent skating, and ability to make simple passes out of his own end.

He’s not blowing us away by any means but Dorrington has looked better in NCAA hockey than he showed us in the USHL last year and that is promising and shows that continuous development is happening in his game.

Like we said earlier, there were a lot of games happening but not a lot going on.

Even Connor Lockhart, who is one of the top-scoring players in the OHL, was quiet this weekend. He only had one point in his three games after putting up 10 points in his first four.

We hope that’s not the Canucks Conversation Curse hitting him, as Lockhart joined us for an interview about his hot start.

Jonathan Lekkerimäki played in two games but was unable to get a point. We watched his game on Saturday morning and almost fell asleep through the snoozefest as it turned out to be a scoreless game through 65 minutes of hockey. It went on to be a shootout win for Lekkerimäki’s team but he was not one of the shooters.

A positive takeaway from Lekkerimäki’s quiet week was that he played 12:37 and 13:49 in the two games this week and those are the two top-minute games for him on the season.

D-Petey, Elias Pettersson had a quiet week but did slide into two SHL games. He played 6:32 and 4:29 in those two affairs and then logged a ridiculous amount of minutes in a J20 game on Sunday.

No points for D-Petey, who has been electric in the J20 this season, and those SHL games are nice to see as he continues to develop as an 18-year-old.

Defenceman Kirill Kudryavtsev had an assist this week in OHL play. The 18-year-old, left-shot defenceman now has one goal and four assists through eight games with the Soo Greyhounds.

We don’t have much on Jonathan Myrenberg, who had two Allsvenskan games last week. He stopped playing after the eight-minute mark of the first period in his game on Friday. We’re not sure if it was due to an injury, because it didn’t look like he got banged up at any point in the game. We will check in with his Allsevnskan team.

We are going to be keeping a close eye on Harvard’s season opener on Thursday. Goaltender Aku Koskenvuo is on the roster and we expect him to fight for the starting role against the returning starter of Harvard. We will surely have an update next week if he draws into his first NCAA action.

Sticking with goalies, Ty Young is getting shredded in the WHL, he’s sitting with a 4.77 GAA in four games, but more importantly, he’s showing an early commitment to applying the things he’s learned in his short time working with Ian Clark. Arturs Silovs won his first start in an overtime win on Saturday night against the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL.

This wraps it up for another Blackfish Prospects Report! We hope to have more goals and highlights to bring for you next week but unfortunately, I can’t wave my magic wand and produce for Jonathan Lekkerimäki. He’s got to get on the ice for some power play time and do it himself!
