Tonight in Rogers Arena, the Vancouver Canucks honour long-tenured defenceman Alex Edler as he signed a one-day contract with the club to officially retire as a member of the organization.
The now 38-year-old spent 15 years with the Canucks, setting franchise records in games played (925), goals (99), assists (310), points (409), powerplay points (177), shots on goal (2021), hits (1,432), and blocked shots (1,732) by a defenceman. But he is aware that he may not hold onto the top spot for long as current Canucks captain Quinn Hughes is nipping at his heels for some of these offensive records.
“I have those records because I was here for so long. He’s going to break every record cause that’s how good he is. They’re going to be gone very soon, and he deserves that. You all see him out there. He’s a top player.”
In just 366 NHL games under his belt, Hughes has 43 goals, 292 assists, 335 points, 144 powerplay points and 733 shots on goal. Among Canucks defencemen, Hughes ranks 17th in games played (559 behind Edler), 14th in goals (56 behind Edler), second in assists (18 behind Edler), second in points (74 behind Edler), second in powerplay points (33 behind Edler), 11th in shots on goal (1,288 behind Edler).
Hughes will likely surpass Edler in assists this season and potentially have another strong season in points and powerplay points. He started off on a good note on opening night against the Calgary Flames, where he registered assists, one of which came on the powerplay.
One record that will likely stay intact in Vancouver for a while is Edler’s 1,732 blocked shots. Edler added to that total in his two seasons with the Los Angeles Kings, where he added 204 to bring his total to 1,936, good for 10th all-time in NHL history.
No matter when or if Hughes breaks some of these records, Edler’s legacy in Vancouver will live on forever. And he will be honoured as such tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers.
