The Abbotsford Canucks hot streak continues. After starting the season 0-2-1 through their first three games, the Canucks have climbed to the top of the Pacific Division with five straight wins.
To begin the season, the Canucks made the trip to Calgary and fell by a score of 4-2 in back-to-back games to the Wranglers. This time, the Canucks had the home-ice advantage. And despite trailing in both games and allowing the first goal in each, they still won. The team found a way to get the win in both third periods.
Jacob Quillan had a big weekend with his new team. Acquired as part of the Aatu Räty trade, he is now up to six points in his first four games with the Canucks, registering a point in each outing and capped it off with a hat trick.
Kirill Kudryavtsev continues to miss time, now having not been in the lineup for five straight games. Head Coach Ryan Papaioannou told reporters last week he hoped to have him back in the lineup this weekend. Braeden Cootes and Bennett Schimek missed both games this weekend, and reports suggest that Cootes might not travel with the team as they head down to California for a couple of midweek road games.
Jack Thompson has yet to play this season due to injury. However, he was placed on NHL waivers on Sunday and cleared Monday morning, suggesting that he may be ready to return at some point during their upcoming California road trip.
Trey Fix-Wolansky’s three points this weekend helped him leapfrog Ty Mueller, taking the team lead with nine through eight games. Mueller is now up to eight points and sits alone in second, while Cootes, Quillan, Kole Lind and Riley Patterson are all tied with six points.
Game one
There was nothing in terms of scoring during the first period of Saturday’s game. That being said, the Canucks second line of Mueller, Ben Berard, and Vilmer Alriksson created a few chances and had some shifts with excellent offensive zone time.
Alriksson continued to impress in his ability to use his size and speed to fend off defenders to create chances. He showed that again in the opening frame, finding Berard in the slot for a good scoring chance after driving wide and creating space for himself to make a play.
It was a similar story in the second period. The only goal of the period came from a Wranglers power play that put them up 1-0. Though the Berard, Mueller, Alriksson line continued to generate and dominate the puck down low. Lind and Fix-Wolansky have been very dangerous on rush chances since being put on a line together, and that was especially apparent in the second period.
The third period was where the Canucks finally had success finding the back of the net. Sawyer Mynio got the Canucks on the board early in the third period to tie the game, with a rocket of a one-timer off a feed from Patterson.
A few minutes later, Quillan showed off a great burst of speed to send himself on a partial breakaway on the penalty kill. He couldn’t keep a handle on the puck on his deke, so the game remained tied at one.

However, the Canucks built off that chance, taking their first lead of the game. Mynio fired another big shot on the power play; Berard followed up on the rebound but was stopped. Mueller got a second rebound chance and made no mistake for his fifth goal of the season.
Later in the third, the Canucks doubled their lead on some pretty passing between Quillan and Cole Clayton, who notched his first of the season from the high slot.
The Canucks completed the third period comeback with a 3-1 win over the Wranglers. Nikita Tolopilo had an excellent night between the pipes, stopping 21 of 22 shots and earning his fourth win of the season.
Game two
Game two had a very similar start to the night before. No goals were scored in the first period; the only real dangerous scoring chance the Canucks had was off some hard work from Mynio as he stepped up and created a 2-on-0 break with Anri Ravinskis. But Ravinskis couldn’t capitalize.
Tolopilo also had to make an outstanding save in the first period, stopping Dryden Hunt on the breakaway, and stretching out to stop the rebound to keep the game all square.

Just 20 seconds into the second period, Alex Nylander got the Wranglers on the board with a bit of a weak shot that was able to beat Tolopilo clean from the top of the circle. The Canucks followed up quickly, with Quillan scoring his first of the night on a broken play between Lind and Fix-Wolansky.

The Canucks kept the pedal on the medal in the second period, dominating play in the Wranglers’ zone. This led to two power play opportunities, though the power play struggled and nothing came of it.
Midway through the second, the Wranglers hemmed the Canucks in their zone for a bit and regained the lead on a cross-ice pass and a shot that beat Tolopilo short-side high.
Early in the third, the Canucks once again tied the game. Tim Rego rounded the back of the Canucks net and fed Fix-Wolansky with a stretch pass to the far blue line. Fix-Wolansky walked in, cut back on the Wranglers defender, and ripped a shot to tie the game 2-2.
WHAT. A. RIP. Trey Fix-Wolansky gets the #Canucks second of the night, it's 2-2.
The game stayed back and forth until late in the third, when Quillan scored his second of the night after a long offensive zone shift. Fix-Wolansky moved the puck out front to Quillan, who put it in the back of the net through some traffic out front to take a 3-2 lead.

Quillan then followed that up with a hat trick goal into the empty net, sealing the victory and getting his first career AHL hat trick.

Standouts
The clear standout from this weekend was Quillan. Prior to the Canucks acquiring him, he had zero points through four games with the Toronto Marlies. Now just four games into his Canucks career, Quillan has registered six points, including a hat trick, and has scored a point in every game.
His speed clearly stands out when he’s on the ice. With the Cootes injury, Quillan centred a line with Lind and Fix-Wolansky, a role that doesn’t require dominating puck touches. However, he has shown the ability to move through the neutral zone with speed and get to the right spots to create scoring opportunities for himself.
Once again, Fix-Wolansky was a major standout this weekend. He plays the game with a ton of pace and commands the puck. He did go pointless on Saturday, but had three points on Sunday. Whether he’s producing or not, he continues to play the same way. Despite his smaller stature, he’s hard to move off the puck and battles every shift.
Both Fix-Wolansky and Quillan’s recent play certainly have to be turning heads in Vancouver. Given the NHL club’s struggles, adding the speed and energy that they both bring to every shift, it wouldn’t be a shock to see one or both earn a call-up to the NHL sooner rather than later.
Mynio was another standout, not only because his heavy point shots created two points for him, but also because, in Kudryavtsev’s absence, he has taken on extra responsibilities as the team’s number one defenceman. He’s first over the boards in almost all situations and has been a steady presence on the Canucks back end. This weekend in particular, he showed the ability to evade pressure in the defensive zone for an easier zone exit, which is considerably impressive for a 21-year-old blueliner in his second season in pro hockey.
What’s next?
The Canucks head back on the road for a quick two-game road trip. Abbotsford kicks off in San Jose in a rare midweek matchup with the Barracudas on Wednesday, then faces another California opponent, the Bakersfield Condors, on Friday night. Both games are set for a 7:00 PM PT puck drop.
