Abby Canucks preview: Canucks return home to open final homestand vs. Gulls

The Abbotsford Canucks return to Rogers Forum to kick off their final two homestands of the 2025–26 season.
First up: the San Diego Gulls, who arrive fighting to hold onto the seventh and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division.
In a season that finds the Canucks last in overall standings, success hasn’t come easily. That said, they’ve found some minor success against San Diego this year, winning their last two meetings to even the season series at 3-3-0. Their most recent matchup was a convincing 4–0 victory, highlighted by rookie goaltender Aku Koskenvuo’s first career AHL shutout.
The Canucks will look to build on their favourable 19-9-0-2 all-time record against the Gulls and finish off their season series on a positive note. Game One goes Saturday at 7:00 p.m. PT, with Game Two set for Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
Keys to the game
Scoring goals is always important, but for Abbotsford, it’s been the issue in 2025-26. It’s as simple a game plan as you can chalk up, but scoring in the net will be crucial for success.
The Canucks have been shut out in all three of their losses to the Gulls this season, making offensive execution a clear priority heading into the weekend. Currently on a five-game losing streak, Abbotsford has managed just four goals over its last three games and ranks last in the league with 146 goals scored.
Finding ways to generate offence will be critical if they hope to close out the homestand on a positive note.
Players to watch
Bennett Schimek has quickly become an intriguing piece for Abbotsford. While he has just three primary assists so far, his vision and hockey IQ have stood out. Head coach Manny Malhotra has shown confidence in the newcomer, regularly deploying him in a top-line role alongside Arshdeep Bains.
Danila Klimovich remains one of the team’s more dangerous offensive weapons. Although he’s gone pointless in his last two outings, he has been productive throughout March, leading the team with five goals and co-leading with nine points over a 10-game stretch.
On the back end, Jack Thompson continues to make an immediate impact. With nine points (3G, 6A) in nine games since joining the team, he has added both offensive production and stability. Thompson has taken over quarterback duties on the top power play unit and has quickly become one of the team’s most involved players in all situations.
What’s next?
Following this weekend’s set, the Canucks will get a brief break before hosting the Coachella Valley Firebirds for their final home series of the season.
Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. PT on both Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4.
